Amphicar floatilla

There was wonderfull convoy of Amphibicars going thru Gov's Island channel Monday. Have a great shot of a light blue/aqua (without umbrella ) one going under bridge. If this is you,or you know who, give me a pm. Sorry unable to load pics-that would make it easy.

I saw these cars last year in Meredith.. all the colors reminded me of the houses in Bermuda..

They were over on Winnisquam Sunday afternoon.

Thanks for posting the pics! I loved seeing them, wish I had seen them in person. What fun, but it looks like a big wave might swamp them??

pcmc 08-26-2014 07:57 PM

I have always found these neat and thought it would be fun to be able to just drive into the water and float away. My problem would be I would hold my breath until all 4 wheels where back on dry land. :)
Thanks for the pics.
It's nice to see the group of them enjoying there 'toys' as they were meant to be used.

Completely for the sake of fun .... You can expect the people enjoying the large boat looking over at the cars to be thrilled get an up close action view and then questioning, " What the hey about the 150' rule? " :)

Water Camper 08-26-2014 08:38 PM

150' Rule

Everyone was going at headway speed !!

Hahaha, good point.

Are they still around here? Will they be on the lake today? Does anyone know?

dpg 08-27-2014 06:17 AM

They seem to sit way to low in the water for my liking. They just look like a sinking waiting to happen for some reason.

That's what I thought too. There used to be a red one owned by a local Wolfeboro person and I don't remember it sitting that low in the water but it must have. Do they sometimes take on water? They sure look like they could.

Would love one

This would make a perfect islander conveyance. It would allow travel to any port on the lake and land travel from there. I could finally get to Sawyers by, ah, "boat". And, no need to wait for a dock.....though I probably wouldn't go out in one on a weekend.

Makes me wonder what the heck do they do if a large wave comes at them.

You can see from this video that they even have trouble with small waves. I always assumed that the interior was built to get wet and has some kind of bailing system or pump to keep it from filling with water. There doesn't seem to be examples of them sinking. If I had one I think I'd stick to rivers and ponds and stay off the ocean and big lakes.

Here's another good video shot in Meredith in 2006:

I think those videos answer our question. They do take on water. You are right, they must have some kind of pump system. Seems like they could get swamped pretty easily though.

AC2717 08-28-2014 12:51 PM

they do have a bilge system and it pumps out somewhere near where the trunk lid meets the body at the back window and over the side of the rear fenders

It looks a little like the Fiat commercial
