Do you remove your GPS?

I just recently bought a new Garmin GPS and it wasn't cheap. Everytime I leave my boat, I detach it and bring it with me. I do this whether I stop at a place like the Weirs or button my boat up for the night. I own a dock in a boat club and my dock neighbors tell me that I shouldn't be worried about anyone stealing it and they leave their GPS in their boats all the time. Am I the only one doing this?

I too remove my GPS/Fishfinder. I do not believe in leaviing an expensive item like the GPS/Fishfinder in view for someone to even think about taking it. No sense in tempting a theif to steal.

I usually leave out GPS (if I have it out at all) but stow my portable VHF. Often my GPS is put already stowed since I generally only use it at night.

When I had a removable GPS (on a dashboard mount), I used to remove it and at least stow it below when I left the boat.

Why tempt those that will grab an easy target?

I keep mine with the boat...

When docking other than where my boat is based, if I'm staying over night I always put on the bow and cockpit cover, leaving the GPS on its mount...out of sight, out of mind.

I used to until I got a lock for my mount. It replaces the knob and is lockable.

I would remove it. I bought my boat last fall and it came with a Garmin 700 gps/chartplotter and software. About $2000 if I had to replace it!

I remove it and lock it in the head when I leave the boat unattended. It takes a minute and takes the temptation out of sight.

I also take mine whenever I leave the boat out of my sight. It's probably the single most valuable item and very easy to walk off with so it always goes with me.

I remove mine and if we are docking away from our home port (West Alton), I do it before we get near the dock. I shut it down, take it off the mount, and hand it to my wife to be put in the head. Like others, out of sight, less temptation.

It occurs to me that hose who don't remove their GPS or other items, are less likely to say so in a public forum.

Things that are easy to walk away with, I usually at least put out of site. Same for things in my car.

thanks, i'm more of a summer lurker :). in-laws have a place and a small bow rider. I have a boat in boston and do most of our boating there. I have run some boats back and forth to florida.

I'm probably more comfortable on a run like that than with the winni buoy system. Taking my time learing the lake :)

I had mine stolen out of my boat while in winter storage at a marina. I replaced it and never leave it in the boat or when out and about, lock it in storage. It's a simple thing to remove it and the cost and hassle of replacing it is high.
