New Visitor To Governor's Island

According to reports here on radio station z100, Britney Spears wants to move to Governor's Island in NH. She has her eyes set on a house that she likes over there. I just found this interesting that a star like that would move to a quaint island. P.S. Ill be up there in Laconia on July5th, woooo hooo. :D

Frdxplorer 06-16-2004 08:14 AM

As a 23 year old male, I believe that we need to be welcoming of the stars who wish to call the lakes region their second home. I believe that Miss Britney would make a fine addition to the celebrity list of lake goers and I would be happy to personally show her around. ;)

Britney rumor confirmed it seems...

Straight from the headlines...
BRITNEY'S LOVE NEST
Pop beauty Britney Spears' relationship with new love Kevin Federline is getting serious -- the happy couple are moving in together.

The singer has spent big on a lavish property situated on Governor's Island, N.H. -- an area so exclusive only the mega-rich can buy there.

And according to sources, Britney is already desperate to conclude her Onyx Hotel tour in order to spend some quality time with dancer Federline at the tranquil love nest.

A source says of the three-bedroom house: "It's stunning. It has amazing views over Lake Winnipesaukee and is far from the hustle and bustle Britney is so desperate to get away from. She says she can't wait to move in and get to know the area."

Welcome Ms.Spears

I hope the rumor mill is right on this one. It would be nice to see some of the Hollywood types return to the Lake Winnipesaukee region. It is history repeating itself, that this beautiful area draws that type of crowd. Hopefully if she comes everyone will have the courtesy to leave her alone, so that she may enjoy our lakes and mountains.

Maybe she'll be here sooner than later.

This article says she cancelled her summer tour.

Guess she didn't shop or expect to be around during Bike Week. Talk about hustle and bustle. Maybe she would 'copter in to her exclusive crib. I've seen her face on TV and elsewhere but I'm not sure I would recognize her in person. Guess I'll have to look for the bikini surrounded by bodyguards. ;)

In any case, I think all celebs should be left alone to enjoy the area like us "normal" folk.

KonaChick 06-17-2004 10:02 AM

Yes...the helicopters buzzing overhead, the inevitable traffic jams when she's in town and the 50 ft. cigar boat (or 70 ft. cabin cruiser, take your pick) will add SO much ambiance to the lake. I can't wait!! oye vey!

fatlazyless 06-17-2004 01:00 PM

Welcome to Governor's Isle.

With Missy Britney as an across-the-water neighbor, I expect to be getting one of those $79.94-300X-telescope & tripod rigs which Wal-Mart has for gazing at the stars. Will be setting it, way over here, on the poor side of the lake, ahem.

When you get that, if you wouldn't mind letting me know. I would be happy to come over and help offset the cost for some viewing time. Thanks!! ;)

"Aspenization"

Aspen, Colorado had a similar influx of celebrities buying 2nd and 3rd vacation homes. Aspen residents called it "Aspenization". Then it happened to Boulder, and then scores of other locales.

From a ten-year old Boulder article:

"Of course, paradise isn't cheap. 'If you're doing business in Boulder, you've got to be willing and able to pay for it'... [Boulder] enticed nature-loving newcomers, [who] are driving up real estate costs. In the past two years Boulder's property prices have escalated faster than those of almost any city in the country. The median price of a home is now more than $230,000. "Employees cannot afford to live within city limits," reports Rochkind, who bemoans what he calls the "Aspenization of Boulder."

Here, we don't have to reach quite as far. Locals are still slinging hash browns in our restaurants, taking in the view off
Rattlesnake, working our cash registers and walking the streets freely.

Sometimes you just have to wait in traffic for a little while before you can get to it.

Brittney, The New Neighbor?

Well, If Brittney is planning to buy or has bought there are 6 properties on the market on Govenors Island and one sold for 1.7 Million on 6/9/04 (Edgewater Drive - Govenors Island). :D No properties are pending at this time.

We may know soon since she has cancelled her tour and will have alot of free time after any required surgery.

If I am out on the lake it would be nice to see her. There have been other is the lakes region over the years too.

Real Estate is my business! :rolleye2:

Ms. Britney

The influx of rich and famous explains the multi-million jets flying into Laconia -- more and more each year.

I understand that there are already famous people that own houses all over the lake -- we just never hear about them. Most of the time their friends and families use the houses....the owners MAY get up here for a few days or week or so here and there throughout the year.

If Miss Former Mousekateer (sp?) moves in, can you imagine the security she'll need? She'll be accessible by public road AND water -- 24/7. I can just see the jokers with the cig boats trying to flex their muscle by cruising by her place all day. Ha! Should be quite the freak show.

I have to admit, it's nice being a resident of the new "playground" -- we may eventually get our own film festival!

Enjoy the bikes this weekend! Drive safely,
Gravy

New Neighbor

Based on media reports and real estate data there is a property that could be the one Britney is purchasing. One home on the north side of Goveror's Island is pending at an asking price of 1.8 Mil and it has been under contract for most of this year.

Latest Britney News (or gossip?)

This morning the news reports were that Britney is engaged to be married. I missed the name of the lucky fellow (Kevin Fedder_____ - a dance partner maybe) but they have had a long and serious 2 month relationship.

Marrage after such a long courtship, makes me expect that in a year or so their Gov Island love nest will be up for sale. After the divorce of course. Hope she has time to enjoy the area.

Do you think that the area in front of her new home will become one of the favorite rafting zones? FatLazy, keep us informed of what you see over there :D

....and will she be able to rope off the area in front of her house like Governor Mitt one wonders?????

Dazed & Confused?

Wasn't that the name of a movie? I'm glad we're not coming up to the lake until September. I sure wouldnt want to get run over by one of the motorcyclists who had just " tanked up". { Free shots of bourbon from Jack Daniels-- are you kidding me?} I'm surprised you only killed three riders!

Now, maybe, if we could get Brittany Spears on a motorcycle ( with clothes on, no less), she would be disenchanted with her " honeymoon haven" and leave. Man- talk about lake polution. I'll bet the old indian cheifs are crying at we've done to their paradise!

Hi Gilly 20,
Don't rush to the Jack Daniels tent in hopes of getting anything for free. The so-called "free" shots you have alluded to start at $5.25 and go up from there. :) BTW, giving alcohol away for free in NH is illegal.

Gov Island Assoc needs to APPROVE buyers ?

Some news sources said that no one from the Spears family or organization made application to the association to buy on Governor's Island. And no one representing them received approval to buy. What's that all about?

Since when does a prospective property buyer need to be "approved" before they can buy a home? This isn't approval for a mortgage but for some other screening process. I understand that some developments for seniors, and some condo and cooperative complexes have requirements for new owners but a private home on Gov Island?

Can someone explain what this Governor's Island Association is all about? What qualifies you to be approved or not approved?

Britney Spears

OK....now please don't jump all over me .... and I'm only asking to get my 15 yo daughter off my back. Does anybody know what's the latest on her buying a place on Govenors Island? We've rented a place on Moultonborough Neck for a week at the end of the month and my daughter's figuring on spotting Miss Spears. Thanks, all! Jim

Story was not true. It was fabricated in a bar. She will not be buying on the Lake.

From todays "Citizen"

Governor’s Island: Spears rumor draws attention to exclusive community
By RICH BERGERON

Staff Writer

This Governor’s Island home at 81 Shore Road is listed for $2.5 million and offers 4,000 square feet of living space, western exposure with views of Gunstock, and 150 feet of water frontage on Lake Winnipesaukee. Workers in the home made a sign recently, jokingly dubbing the estate "Britney’s New Home." (Citizen Photo/Rich Bergeron)
GILFORD — Governor’s Island offers some of the most luxurious real estate and is considered one of the most prestigious addresses available in the Lakes Region.

There are 10 listings available on the island currently, but you’ll need to have plenty of resources to afford one. Prices range from $900,000 to just under $5 million.

The exclusive island community came into the spotlight in recent weeks as speculation spread that pop superstar Britney Spears was buying a home here. Although the speculation continues, real estate agents involved in selling properties on the island say its quiet lakeside setting with spectacular views make it a natural draw for anyone who can afford the top shelf prices.

Dotted with mansions all along the waterfront, there are also tidy little neighborhoods in the center of the island and houses of all shapes and sizes.

Most of the waterfront homes offer stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Belknap Mountain range. Spears reportedly purchased a house on the island recently, leaving some residents unhappy and others ready to welcome her.

Governor’s Island was part of a land grant from King George II in 1727 for good deeds performed in the colonies, and not one governor ever lived here. Stilson Hutchins, the founder of The Washington Post, was once the only resident. The newspaper magnate’s summer home burned to the ground in 1934. Hutchins eventually donated the island to the town.

Real Estate firms Coldwell Banker, James L. Leggett Associates, and Preferred Properties all represent homes there.

One estate for sale on the island is available for $4.995 million and is listed by Coldwell Banker. The least expensive property being sold by Coldwell Banker is 152 Edgewater Drive. The two bedroom home has 150 feet of frontage on Lake Winnipesaukee. It is selling for $899,000 and is one of seven properties on the island represented by Realtor Susan Bradley.

Bradley has been selling property on Governor’s Island for more than 20 years. "It’s really been a nice experience," she said about her work. "Just meeting the wonderful families that move in. It’s a very exciting place to work. It’s the best place in the world."

A property at 103 Shore Road Extension is being sold by Real Estate Broker James Legget for $1,950,000 and features four bedrooms and two bathrooms with Lake Winnipesaukee just steps from the back porch. The cozy cottage-style home has been converted for year-round use and is complete with a kids’ loft that can double as a bedroom. The house has vaulted ceilings, expansive views from the screened in porch, and two 50-foot docks.

Vacationer Martha Conti was renting the house and said the only disadvantage was, "You can’t dive off the dock because of all the rocks."

As her dog Sunshine waltzed right into the water to cool off, she said being able to bring the golden retriever is one of the reasons she rents the house.

"It’s unique because it’s on a peninsula," said Legget about the home. Legget said he has "done just about everything you can do" in real estate and enjoys working on Governor’s Island "probably because it’s under-stated and it’s quiet but not pretentious." He also pointed out that the island is close to restaurants, shopping, and the interstates.

Charlie Eisenhower was recently on the island painting inside one of the newest estates. "I love it, I really do," he said about working there. He is not as enthralled about the possibility of Spears becoming a resident.

"It’s not gonna be as exciting as everybody thinks it’s gonna be," he said about the star coming to the island. "She’s not gonna go to Gilford Beach." He also added, "Now if Adam Sandler were moving out here, that would be cool."

The 81 Shore Road home pictured in The Boston Herald as something Britney could buy for $2.5 million has some spectacular views, but it is very close to the road. Preferred Properties Realtor Ellen Mulligan reported that the house has just been completed this year and has a first-floor master bedroom and two guest suites. It also offers western exposure and views of Gunstock across the lake. It has not been bought by Spears, Mulligan said.

"I think it’s ridiculous. I can’t imagine why she’d want to live there. It’s not a gated community, there’s not much security. I would assume she’d go for a gated community some place," said resident Ivy Merrell about Spears.

Merrell enjoys the island and said, "It’s a wonderful spot to live, the most wonderful place in the world."

She has recently noticed boats slowing down around the shore and more people driving around the neighborhoods. "She isn’t even here yet. Imagine what it would be like if she did come," said Merrell. "She has a right to go where she wants to go. I just hope she chooses some other place."

With three floors of living space, fabulous expansive views, a game room with a pool table, an open family room, five bedrooms and 3½ baths, Susan Armstrong’s house at 440 Edgewater Drive is a steal at $1.795 million dollars. Armstrong said her family owned the house for the past 11 years and it is hard to part with. The home has been on the market for a year now, she reported.

Preparing the house for summer, Armstrong arranged some chairs outside and remarked about the hammock near the edge of the water. It had not been set up yet, but the location seemed perfect. Between the two trees on the top of a shaded hill is a stunning view of the lake and mountains beyond. She pointed to a small peak in the distance and said, "We’re one of the few on the island who can see all the way over to Mount Washington." The M/S Mount Washington cruise ship also passes by regularly.

Island residents Carole and Walter Young are the latest to sell their property at 60 Edgewater Drive. It went on the market June 26 for $2,895,000. The Youngs enjoyed dinner on the back porch the previous night and spoke about the possibility of Spears moving into the neighborhood.

"Everybody has a right to live where they want to live," said Carole Young. "It would be better if it was a nice looking actor moving in, but it doesn’t bother me any."

"I wouldn’t care," said Walter Young. "I’ll go jogging with her."

In response to reports that the island life isn’t exciting enough for Spears, Carole Young remarked, "She probably brings all of her excitement with her."

The couple has lived on the island for about 2½ years. "We love to be by the water," said Walter Young.

"Plus the privacy and the quietness," added Carole Young.

They are not strangers to living in wealthy neighborhoods as they have owned a home in a community in Florida that included resident celebrities like Stephen King, Robert Ludlum, Katie Couric and Connie Chung. The Youngs said that they will not sell to Spears unless she is willing to pay much more than what their home is worth.

In that case, Carole Young said, "We’ll paint it any color she wants."

I too have heard rumors that Governor's Island was a restricted community.
I also notice that no one cares to comment about the situation. I wonder what criteria the Association uses to approve or disapprove a purchase? Also recall someone mentioned that one could not rent their Governor's Island property without some approval.

Considering the varied topics and messages on the forum I find it peculiar that there has not been discussion about this subject. Makes me think this is a topic people do want to talk about.

I guess I should chime in. I am a resident of the infamous Governor's Island. The only criteria for joining the association is to be able to buy the house. They had no right to prevent us fom buying anything. The association is just like any neighborhood association these days, except they don't control the color of houses like some. The association does maintain some common land, and it runs the kids club and park.

It really is no big deal. Basically, like with any real estate, the only color that counts is green!

Frank
