GPS Etrex Legend

I bought this two years ago and I really like it for highway use. When I do get onto Winni do you think this GPS will work (with the Bizer downloaded chart) or which one do you prefer/suggest is the best for Winni?

Won't work

I have the same GPS. The Bizer chart is not yet available for that GPS. While the GPS itself will work perfectly while on the lake, it is all but useless without a good chart of the lake. I am not aware of any true nautical chart of Winni that will work in a Garmin GPS.

The closest I was able to get was Garmin's Topo maps. Load the appropriate one onto the Legend and at least *most* of the land within the lake will show up close to correctly. However, no bouys, hazards, depths etc. will be shown.

Bizer has stated that he is working on a chart that will work in Garmin, but he has yet to release it.

Garmin GPS and lake charts

Check out this thread http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...ead.php?t=3628 and/or do a search for GPS & Garmin on this forum. Basically you have no really good options when it comes to Garmin GPSs and lake charts.

You won't find a chip that has Winni exclusively on it, but there was a chip available for around $90 some odd dollars that I bought for my Garmin...........180 I think.........several years back and I sold the boat a couple of years ago.

The chip was for the New England area, or maybe even larger. I do know that it was a good reference tool and I only found a couple of errors in it, one being an island off of Rattlesnake that isn't there and the other was the omission of eagle Island.

I put in all the marker locations and I was very satisfied. Not as good as Bizer's I'm sure, but it served me well.

I have an Etrex Legend that I used to find the north pole. If you get the Mapsource Eastern US Topo software from Garmin you get a fair map of the lake. If you then buy the waypoint file software from Bizer and load the waypoints and the map into the Etrex you have a pretty good (but not great) lake map. Then again you can only see it on that tiny display anyway.

You can enter the waypoints for free but it takes a lot of time.

Thanks for the tip.

I was planning on just getting the download waypoints from Bizer and then get their lake chart just as a back up.
