Jolly Jays

I was at the lake this weekend and when it started to rain late in the day, we went over to Funspot. But before we went there we went across the street. I haven't been over there.....probably since they had the animal farm there with the goats out front. Anyway, we went into the little store there called Jolly (something). It said joke giftes, novelties etc. The second you opened the door you were hit in the face with a blast of smoke. But thats not the worst part and this is where I need help. In the back I am pretty sure there were xxx rated DVDS for sale. I didn't stay long enough to stare as I wanted to get the kids out. Is this true or was it just my imagination?

PennyPenny 11-05-2007 07:53 PM

Jolly Jays. He used to be in downtown Laconia back in the 90's and moved up to the Weirs quite awhile ago. He had the same "backroom" when he was in downtown Laconia. Not the typical business type person you would expect huh? I don't want to start a frenzy on here so I won't say anything else other then ask some of the natives about it.

Weirs guy 11-06-2007 12:25 PM

Time Out!

Where exactly is this place? Has there really been a Disney Land of carnal naughtiness under my nose all this time?

Sounds like a Weirs Guy in depth investigation is in line!

Well, like it or not there must be a market for both the front and back room items. I assume that the warnings are clearly posted regarding the content in the back room. Sad to say that children are exposed to more damaging items on the internet, TV and movies.

GTO 11-06-2007 12:59 PM

well.....

it is true. I don't know how long this Jolly guy has been there.....but I think there are some questions that probably sould be addressed. There are no signs on the outside of the store saying what might be inside. The sign said something about it being a joke shop of some sort. What a great idea. Bring the kids in to look at some good practical joke supplies. Thats what I thought anyway. But behind the register, behind the black sheet that is loosely "hung", you can clearly see into this backroom. I think the joke items are just a front as there is so much dust on them. So you bring your family to family friendly Funspot, play a few games, go across the street to ride the go carts, enjoy a Harts slush and then go rent a good movie for the night, maybe my favorite, "On Golden Blonde". Anyway, Does Funspot own this building and leases it? Why would this proud business owner set up shop at a family fun center?

I disagree. My pre-teens, who watch some PG-13 movies and the occasional R (mostly Bond flix), are not exposed to the things you might find in a Spencer Gifts or, even worse, a Jolly Jays. Nor are their friends. Sure, they are hearing and seeing a limited amount of suggestive material (crude jokes mostly), but it's not in-your-face visuals. Exactly what children are you referring to? Unless they're teens, they probably aren't looking at this kind of stuff yet. The kids I know are too well supervised and, honestly, don't have the interest at this point. It's just too yucky for them!

Don't be so sure about that.... Although I guess that would defend on your definition of "teens"...... The number of 11-14 years old combing the web, and yes indeed finding all the XXX rated sites is alarming..... I know many people that have been surprised when they go view the History on the Kids computers.......

I also have heard of schools putting monitoring software in place because of the number of 6th 7th and 8th graders Popping onto the XXX rated sites.....
kids are getting curious younger and younger, and the advent of the www web has made these things way to easy to access.....

All that aside, I too wonder what the heck is a shop like that doing so close to the Fun Spot???????

Jolly Jays

Had to pick my husbands brain for this but the owners last name is Timmon. If I remember correctly, there were some issues when his shop wanted to move into the building it is in. People were concerned about his "products" and being so close to the family campground next door. This was all reported in the Citizen paper when it was going on. Can't remember any other details right now except that it was a concern. If you Google Jolly Jays Joke Shop, there are several websites referencing it.

my question.....

Sure, we all know that any thing can be viewed on the internet. But I'm talking about Funspot here. A tourist attraction. A place to bring the kids to get them away from the computers. A place where families can go and enjoy themselves. I didn't read about this in the Funspot brochure. No wonder that darn dragon always has a smile on his face. Trust me when I say, when you walk in the door of this place, the videos are in plain sight behind the cloth. Whats next, peep shows at Peppers?

sa meredith 11-06-2007 06:21 PM

Wow...

I pass by that area very regularly all summer long (sadly, no where near the lake from October thru April, my loss) and have never noticed this place. And we actually rode the go-carts there twice this past summer. I'll have to make a point of giving it a look this spring. While I question the location...the middle of a "family fun center"...I guess it is tough to take issue with the business owner. If there were no customers, he would make no money, and, of course, close. But if people pay for his product...well, good for him, as long as it is legal. Now, GTO, about "On Golden Blonde"....
By the way, maybe this is a new product idea for Whining Butcher...hahahahah. That thread just doesn't get old!

So, your saying its ok to sell porn, no matter where it is located, as long as the owner is making money. Because if thats the case, I'm going to set up a roadside stand next to Interlakes High School.
Hey, On Golden Blonde....its lake related, right. And maybe if the Whining Butcher went for this product....maybe he wouldn't be whining anymore. This just gives a whole new meaning to the word "Fun-Spot".

Yes, I do hear you to a point (and only a small point!:emb: ) You MUST have more to worry about. How bout oil approaching 100.00/barrel, gas sky-rocketing, war, etc. etc. I'm not going to add a "joke" shop to the list. Now that you know it's there stay away if it bothers you....Problem solved see, that was easy.:D

Thank you CNN wannabe for bringing me back to reality and todays current events.
And you can use a wood stove to heat your house. And you can take a train or ride a bike to work to avoid gas prices. There, now I've solved a couple of your problems. Can you believe others here complain about people in kayaks at night, speed limits on the lake, the greasy fries at the tamarack, and some local guy named Bahre selling his silly race track. How dare they when there are so many other things going on in the news. Ok, stop the Forum!! lets only talk about oil prices, gas increases and oh yeah, the war. I wonder how much they sell the "oil" for in the back room at Jolly Jays?

SAMIAM 11-07-2007 10:04 AM

LEAVE JOLLY ALONE..........besides....he is stocking a fine variety of tofu in order to attract a more deverse crowd. BBS2 can now grab dinner and a video with only one stop:laugh:

Weirs guy 11-07-2007 12:33 PM

Has anyone here seen a child in the back room at Jolly Jays?

No?

Then I guess he's not hurting any children.

I understand GTO's issue, and as a parent he did the right thing by removing his kids as soon as he figured out what was going on. And if the store doesn't have adequate signage out front then thats another issue to address. But its not like kids are running accross Rt 3 from funspot to buy porn left and right.

Just because its not some of ours cups of tea doesn't make it wrong.

GTO 11-07-2007 12:50 PM

no problem

I just think its a VERY poor location for his type of business. Kids ARE running across Rte 3 to go to the Go carts and then maybe an ice cream....and the very next door is Jolly old saint [Jay] (or whatever). Theres plenty of parents that leave their kids off there (at Funspot) for an hour or so or even kids from the camp ground can wonder over there. There is no sinage out front.....other than joke gifts and whatever else. But wouldn't it be interesting if he did put up a lighted sign that said "XXX Dvds for sale here"

where are you in Texas?

sa meredith 11-07-2007 06:08 PM

serious...

Man, why does everything have to take such a serious turn?????????????!!!!!!
dgp......yeah, of course there are more serious problems in the world...but I believe this is a posting board about and of matters pertaining to the Winnipesaukee area. Lay off a bit, and take a deep breath. Please...
And while I have no issue with people who may be inclined to sell/use/view porn, I find this location a bit "off". Anyhow...
Further more, let me say this: Here in Southern NH, (Salem, Windham) many years ago it was determined that businesses selling porn could not legally just be not allowed to open...so every town (a while back) had to designate an "adult zone". Well, as time went by, eventually someone came along in both towns, and decided this is the type of business they wanted to open. After much protest from residents, it was determined by the city that "hey, too bad. This is the area YOU slated as "adult". Now, the areas were generally "off the beaten path" and way out of the way. The problem now in Windham is that progress has "caught up" to the out of the way area, and the local porn shop there is now in the middle of an up and coming area of town. Anyway, I wonder if such adult zones exist in the lakes region...
Porn shops, and roundabouts...what will they think of next...

Now don't be like that Tractor pull. No harm meant. Replace that ignore button with an Easy Button (you can get them at Staples) and make all the other bad things go away. (not just me)
