Small Sailboat Registration - Hull Numbers?

I am planning on sailing 2 sailboats this year.

14' Sunfish
16' Hobie Cat

1. Do they really bith need to be registered?
2. Do they really need to have hull numbers put on them or is a registration sticker enough??

I can't belive that people actually register sunfishes?? The "letter of the law" reads anything over 12' must be registered, but it seems rediculous. Has anyone ver seen a sunfish with hull numbers on it??

Boats over 12' to be registerd?

New to me. My understanding a boat needs to be registered when there is gas propulsion. I have a Scorpion and a Lightning that are never registered. Must have been a good doobie as I have never been cited. :rolleye1:

Yes, register both your 14' and 16' sailboats.

Sailboats that are 12 feet long and longer must be registered. In NH you need only display the validation decals if your sailboat is at least 12 feet long and less than 20 feet in length. You must carry your registration paper on board while using the boat. You do not need to display the registration numbers on your sailboat if it is under 20 feet, just display the validation decals.

Sailboats less than 12 feet do not need to be registered.

When in doubt, check with Marine Patrol for the most accurate information :)

Hope you have pleasant sailing.

That is certainly a berath of fresh air about not having to display the numbers. It is bad enough to have to pay Forty something dollars so my kids can sail the sunfish...

I can't find this documented anywhere, do you know where I can read the "fine print"?

thanks!

Here's the link to the NH RSA that answers your question.

http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/...XXII-270-E.htm
You may want to refer to sections 270-E3, E4, E8, and E9

It can also be found in the Boaters Handbook:

I hope it doesn't work like the IRS...

If you ask them the rules and they get it wrong you're still screwed.

Thank you

Perfect, thanks for all the info.

Confirmed: Over 12' and under 20" sailboats need a reggistration, and must show a sticker only, no Hull numbers. You are supposed to carry the reggie with you. (I will be sure to let all the kids know this when they are sailing the sunfish LOL)

Paper registration

Oh man! I can imagine what will happen if the paper gets wet!

It is called zip lock.

We keep all our registrations in zip lock baggies, the sleds, the ATV’s and the boat.
I can’t tell you how many times I found a ball of mush on the sled or ATV for a registration.
Thankfully I’ve never had to produce any of them.
