What is this..?
 

I checked my Trail Cam every day.. mostly Raccoons, Squirrels and a few shots of an Opossum.
But this has me stumped: Came in range at 6.09 this morning. The Boss. thinks it's a cat.. but it looks too big to be a cat IMHO.. (but.. she's usually right.. :( ) And I have agreed that you guys and gals are the Jury.. (reluctantly.. :D)

I agree it could be a very large "cat" but cats don't have snouts. Or, is it the background blending in perfectly to form this false snout? Printing the shot of the "cat" and the "cat vacant from the picture" on transparencies could clear up that question.

First picture doesn't look like a cat, second and third one does though...

It's a cat. Background in first pic makes it look like it has a snout but it does not. If you zoom in snout goes away.

I zoomed in as much as I could before the pixels started to showup, cropped, and then adjusted the exposer contrast. The head of the animal looks like a horse.
The head of a cat never appears when I zoom in, it always looks like a snout.

Also just below the head there is a tiny tiny baby elephant. :D

Well.. I think I figured the "snout" thing also.. below is the data file from the picture.. note that the shutter time was 1/33 of a second. you don't really "freeze" an image below 1/60 of a second..(maybe even faster for fast moving object) SO.. I think the snout part of the picture is just blur.. you can also see the odd shape of the eyes..

But.. that doesn't explain the baby elephant.. and I see that clear as a bell! :rolleye1: :D AND... Dianne sees the baby elephant too. :rolleye2:

Looks like he has alot of Maine Coon in him (her?). They can get huge....

It's a Regular Ordinary CAT. I have a cat....for the last 45 years..well there were three cats over that time. There is no snoot on this cat.

NOW: IF this cat was spotted on Rattlesnake...THAT would be a different story...:D :D NB

It looks like a "C" on it's side. Someone else said target. I say "C" for cat:laugh:

Whatever it is it is a cool looking animal, I'd love to see a color picture of it.

Cool I've got to get me one of those cameras, any good local place to purchase. Also, any suggestions for where to set it up I'd like to also get a pic of a tiny Elephant. People at work just don't believe there's any so small in New Hampshire.

In Rusty's blown up picture there is a square pixel over the nose area as if another picture was inserted into that area making it appear the cat has a snout. SteveA, are you messin with us?:laugh:

Maybe you will get a picture of this guy who is roaming around the Lakes region.

If you look at the picture taken at 06:03:55, the patch of ground above the rock contains the detail that makes the cat look like it has a snout.

I think there's a few people messin' with us.;)

Short answer.. no :) I went back and looked at some other night shots of different animal the camera caught at night. Almost all of them have distortions if the animal is moving..

What kind of card are you using. you might try a faster writing card.

I'm using a class 2 in the field cam.. not a bad idea to try one of my spare class 10's to see if it actually makes a difference. Thx

Trail Cam caught just 2 frames of this creature.. doesn't look like any of the very few dogs in our neighborhood.. Coydog?

I'd say it's a coyote. Different than a coydog. Most of the wildlife experts will give you a lot of reasons why interbreeding between coyotes and dogs, while possible, is really very uncommon.

Looks like a coyote with a real bad mange... Coyotes have large bushy tails, this one has no tail to speak of which is the first hair to go when mange is involved. Looks like the front half of his body is missing all it's fur as well... Doubt this one makes it much longer...

Dan, It does look like a coyote after I did a little online research. I hope it's just the lousy resolution on the trail cam after dark (it's infrared as opposed to a flash) is responsible for the lack of detail on the animal.

A coyote's tail is normally very large and bushy. Both shots but especially the first, don't show much of a tail but it does show a small string like tail missing most of the hair, this exactly what mange does.

Mange is the #1 killer of coyote's as well as foxes here in the Northeast.

Like you, I will hope for the best and blame the camera.

Yeah -- that coyote is missing a lot of hair. I had an adult fox with full-blown mange cross the road in front of my car last year in broad daylight. It was completely hairless and in obvious distress. Sad.

You need to get a good outdoor security camera (something like ishoot308 has). Set it up to record when there is motion and then we can see these weird looking animals that you have in your backyard.
Upload the video to youtube and then let us know when you do it.
Tiny elephants and strange looking creatures will be a big hit on youtube. :D

I would love to have a web-cam.. but it would have to be wireless and battery operated. The spot that I would need to set it up is a about 150 feet from any power outlets.

Stoneham ! I grew up next door in Saugus! Man do I miss Toddy's in Wakefield. Anyway.. I'm already "retired" and actively looking to get back to work in the Medical Supplies Sales field.. so a petting zoo is out of the question for the immediate future.

I know they are all around me here in Laconia. Coyotes, fisher cats, deer, bobcats, bears, etc. I haven't seen or heard any but of course they are everywhere...I've been looking and listening. In contrast, a city in Mass. Like Waltham. Densely populated, 7 miles from Boston, with highways right through the middle is loaded with deer coyote and fisher cats. My sister was crossing her street the other night, a very busy neighborhood, and two coyotes came out of the bushes and stalked her ****zu. They are so brazen. Maybe they are just smarter up here with enough food sources to stay hidden. I figured it would be wild kingdom when I moved here, so far nothing...not even a raccoon !!!
I do keep my animals in at night because I'm sure they will get eaten if I don't.
