Best Place to Ride Today with Wife & Young Kids

I am looking for a nice open area (large field would be ideal) to ride with my wife and 2 young sons today.

I am in the Laconia area, have a trailer and can travel the region.

I am not comfortable with taking them on the lake this year, too many inconsistent reports of open water.

Thanks in advance for any/all recommendations.

The lake is very safe in most spots. You will be able to find a larger area of safe passage than you will be able to find a field. For example, at Center Harbor, you can easily launch and find parking for your trailer. Yes, there is open water by the Mount Washington docks. Avoid that, but there are miles of untracked snow along with well worn paths. No doubt, there are spots nearer to you if you look around for lots of bob houses.

This year, the lake is safer than most. The open water you hear about is an exception, rather than the rule. Start educating your kids about ice safety. It is never fully safe. There is always open water to find. However, every kid should learn how to identify and stick the safe parts.

On another note, get your sledding in today (Sunday Jan 24)! The rain forecast for Monday will ruin most trails and make the lake undesirable until we get more snow.

Thanks for the info, it's very much appreciated and I definitely agree with your advice on teaching them to be careful, tread lightly, and respect the ice.

I will likely park over by the movie theater in Gilford and take the short ride up and around to HK and then out on Paugus Bay - it sounds very safe out there.

Snocross at the Lodge in Belmont.

Take a ride over to see the snocross. The kids will love that! My gf grandson is only 8 years old and is one of the top contender in his class. It will be fun to watch!
