April Fools Day Snowstorm?
 

The NWS is predicting 1-1.5" of precip starting Thursday nite and falling all day Friday, mostly as snow - it sounds like a deep and heavy spring snowstorm is on the way. What will this do to the ice? Protect it even more or, will the snow weigh it down, break it up and flood the surface with the warmer water from below? Never a dull moment! Meanwhile, I'm in LA, where it may hit 90 degrees on Thursday and have the snowy drive home from the airport on Friday night to look forward.

The April Fool's Day Blizzard[1][2][3] was a major winter storm in the Northeastern United States on March 31 and April 1, 1997. The storm dumped rain, sleet, and snow from Maryland to Maine leaving hundreds of thousands without power and as much as three feet of snow on the ground.

Due to the day many people took the warning with a grain of salt and thought it wouldn't be that bad.[1] Plows had already begun to be put away for the summer and hardware stores had to sell shovels again even though they already had out patio furniture.[4] One commuter called it "Mother Nature's April Fools' Joke."[4]

Hi all,

First post here. The 1997 storm was legendary, people don't remember just how much snow we got, it really was almost 3 feet of concrete for us in Westwood, MA! Fortunately it began melting before it even stopped falling, and only shut things down for a day or so.

Also, the 1996 event is faulty on that list. Pretty sure it was only 2.1 inches, not 21.

I hope CLA posts on the ice question, I am curious too whether it will be insulated or weakened...

Boston's official snowfall on the 1997 April 1st storm was 25.4 inches.

Just found the link where those top nine storms listed came from.Their numbers don't match the official numbers I found on several other links.I can't find any snowfall amounts even close to the 1996 totals shown.

When this new snow melts what will it do to the lake level?

It will melt pretty fast I would imagine,with temps well into the 40's saturday and all next week,with rain forecasted too most of next week.

As Bill Engvall would say: " It will probably raise it...here's your sign!!!":laugh:

Let's not forget the snowstorm we had on May 1st, 1982. Don't remember exact inches but it was a bunch.

Maybe 3.5" at my place in Meredith. I gotta say it's the happiest I've ever been in regards to an overblown snowfall accumulation forecast.

This snow is the heaviest I have tried to move in a long time. It seems to be compressing right after it falls, making a good total hard to calculate. Someone (or anyone) smarter than me can probably give figures based on water content. I personally won't even begin to try.

Shovelled off the problem area of my roof and put some calcium chloride down to aid in melt off up there. Have to go to work tonight and hopefully I will not have to get up on the roof and 1030 or 1100.:rolleye1:

Those who are shovelling, take it really slow and don't try to move too much at a time.
