View Full Version : Lees Mill/Loon Center Question
Hello! This past weekend my family boated all of the way up Moltonborough to Lees Mill. We anchored and picnicked there. My dad went out snorkling, (He caught, but put back after viewing, a painted turtle!) among the weeds of the shore of the Loon Center! I decided to join him. As we were swimming along the edge of the weeds, we noticed extremely thick boards, evenly placed stretching out a bit into the water:
There was the shore, and then evenly placed, thick boards along going out from land a bit. There was a bit of metal too, but not alot. It looks as if there was a structure there at one time, but it was really cool to see this "wreck" along the bottom of the lake. WHAT IS THIS? If anybody knows what this "Structure" was at one time, I'm really curious to know. Thanks!

Those are old steam boats and barges, some were used when there was a active mill but most are more recent (still quite old) remains of boats used to take care of the bouys and lights. All the markers on the north side of the lake were checked nearly every day from Lees Mills to Wolfboro thru the 50's and maybe into the 60's. There was a short rail line for bring the boats and barge ashore for repairs and storage in the winter.
Much of the bottom going out from Lees Mills into the next bays is covered by decaying sawdust chips. The cove was spared as the flow from the stream and river washed the chips down lake. There are reports of very large snapping turtles living within the many old boilers, also on the bottom; (never bothered or wanted to check out the reports).
The Old Country Store in Moultonboro carries some books that go into greater detail.

KTO, Try going to Lees Mills in September when the old steam boats are there. Not sure what week it is this year but its really cool. Their powered by firewood & they have neat sounding whistles, you can drive there by land or anchor by boat.
Also try going all the way to the end of Moultonborough Bay past Lees Mills into Greens Basin, its a nice ride & real quiet.

Has always started the weekend after Labor day. In the beginning, it was just a weekend event but progress into the week long, two weekend event. The parade of steamboat is normally started on the last Sunday about 10:00 am. The technology may be old, but most of the boats are much newer. Does not take anything away from a great time.
Well worth the trip to visit.
