This past Friday afternoon, 8/14/09, a large black bear was roaming around in the Minge Cove area. It climbed a neighbor's tree and stayed there for almost two hours. Another neighbor took a picture of the bear up in the tree. We estimate it weighed between 250 - 300 pounds. When it finally came down from the tree it proceeded to rummage through several trash cans and then went off into the woods. Here's the photo of the bear up in the tree.

Considering the range of a bear, it would not be a stretch to make that assumption.

We camped up in the Adirondack's when we lived in Upstate NY, and bear visits were a nightly occasion around the dumpsters.

With Minge Cove Marina only being maybe 3/8's of a mile from WAM, not far for our furry friend to walk, especially for a good meal from a full dumpster.:)

This fellow was just off our rear deck last summer in West Alton, may or may no be the same bear.

Sadly, this morning when in Lowe's an associate who lives on Laura Lane in West Alton told me that a 340 lb male was shot by a hunter near his house last fall in bear season. As long as you don't leave food such that they can get at it, they are not a problem. No need to reach for the gun.

Did you try to tickle it's toes?

My son and I had a run-in with a bear on 28A this Summer when he was mowing a neighbor's yard. It was eating berries across the street and someone in a pickup stopped and yelled at it to get it back in the woods but it paid him no heed and continued to eat. Eventually it moved on, but it was clearly going where it wanted. My son thought it would be nice if I stuck around while he mowed.

DRH, I wouldn't walk alone in the woods in West Alton for a while. I think that bear got a good look at you. :)

Just this morning my husband was driving along Rt. 3 through the Weirs, and a black bear crossed the road. Not too far from the Weirs Beach sign.
