The article linked was written by David Poole of the Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer. Poole is one of the more prominent sport writers covering NASCAR on a national basis.

He writes very fondly of Alton Bay and the local inn he stays at while in the area. :)

Yes Sir, you have heard me say it before and I'll say it again: I love Alton Bay...
There is nothing like the quaint little community of Alton bay. I made two trips to Alton this past weekend, unfortunately both were made by car, but I sure enjoyed myself just the same.

Friday evening it was raining, I was tired and recovering from an operation earlier in the week, but that didn't keep me from enjoying the lake (you know there is just so many days of summer to enjoy), besides my granddaughter loves Chinese food and Alton has PJ, which is as good as any of them.

Saturday I overdid as you might have suspected and was to tired to venture down in the boat, so it was by car again. This time it was dinner at Pops, and I spared enough time to catch a few tunes at the band concert.... Boy, was that good, they had a C&W band with a woman singing, who had the most wonderful voice. She did Patsy Cline so good, I thought I was back on Lake Champlain in the 50's when she use to play the beer halls. Us kids would sit out in my father’s big speedboat (tied next to the beer joint) listening to the great performers into the wee hours of the morning. then the long ride back down to Isle Lamont where we lived. We went on to play mini golf at the Blue jay, but my mind was back at Rouses Point, NY 1957 as the tunes echoed up from the bandstand and it sure showed it in my score, the worst, highest score this year, why even my wife beat me (her best score ever).

The docks were full, the popcorn guy was they’re filling the air with a wonderful smell, lots of people milling about, even the old hot rod cars were parked by the side of the road and the "come to meeting" bell at the church camp rang out it off tone message to come to prayers.

Yup, This is Lake Winnipesaukee at it's best. If you haven't had the pleasure of what this little town has to offer, then you'd better go before it's just a memory like Rouses Point is now for me.

W.D --- Thanks for the nice comments about Alton Bay. I'm lucky enough to live here year round, and enjoy the overall simple life here. I barbecued some italian sausage, some onions, and cut up potatoes, made a salad, and the wife and I climbed into the "Upthesaukee" at WAM, eased our way down to the Alton bay docks for supper. (Got this thingee that you heat in the microwave for 4-5 minutes and put in the bottom of this whatchmacallit, and it keeps the food in the corning ware warm.). Popped the cork on a bottle of wine, and ate our supper at the docks, and then settled in for the concert. Got some of the kettle popcorn from White Mt kettlecorn, and then listened to the two hour show from Pony Express (great band, look forward to them every year.) Her rendition of Crazy just gives me chills.
What is funny is that the wife said, "where is the sailboat" and I said that's WD, and he mainly comes over for the fireworks. So, you were there afterall, and glad you enjoyed the concert.

We make most of the concerts, and if you see the teal and white 19 foot bowrider with Upthesaukee on the side, stop by and say hi.

Again, thanks for the kind words about Alton bay, and check out the concert schedule at Alton Parks & Rec. See lake links on this website under "attractions" (sorry about the commercial) :emb:

My friends all think one of the slips at the town dock has my name on it, since I'm there so much.

Our usual routine is to get up to the lake by mid-afternoon on Friday, get settled in, clean up and head out into the boards, shut down the noise maker, turn on some of my favorite tunes, fix a frisky (our boat drink) and unwind from the workweek's worth of tension. If the mood strikes me and the wind is right, I might even set sail. Don't let anyone kid you sailing a big boat like the Valkyrie is a lot of work, I usually save that for the swabies we invite up for the weekend. After a few hours of just drifting around watching the world go by its time to head to Alton Bay.

I like Alton mostly just because it's someplace to go. They seem to have it all: good dockage, good food, good fun and most importantly good people. What would make it better???? The Pavilion if someone could just find a way to make it work... A dance club, a bar hall, a roller skating rink or just an eating place.... I'm so afraid it's going be torched and more condos put up.

So, I'm there most weekends during the good weather. If you see me there, stop by and say hi.
