Chinese Food?

Any thoughts on a good Chinese restaurant around the lake? We are in Moultonborough but I will travel for the good stuff!

I am a huge chinese food fan. friends turned me on to china garden on rte 3 in belmont, and it is amazing. the food is so fresh. their food is all made by hand (crab rangoon execelent), and cooked to order. for good chinese cocktails you cant beat shang hai downtown, great people too.

Mike...we agree on that...we've been going to China Garden for many years......no one else is even close to them.The best Chinese chef north of Boston.We've tried them all because we love Asian cooking and CG is the best of all.Veggies are crisp and fresh,sauces are light and flavorful.......kitchen is clean and well run.

:liplick:Everything mentioned about China Garden is true, our family eats at CG often. The best Chinese food around by far, definatley worth the drive from Moultonborough. I could go on & on about them, but I think you get the picture.

CG is a bit of a ride for me, but very good.

I'll give a 3rd vote for Phu Jee, frequent it often, they used to do lunches, wish they still did.

The best Chinese food in the area is Green Ginger in Tilton. It is a little bit of a hike, but it is far an away the best on the west side of the lake (IMHO).

We got takeout from China Garden a few weeks back and it was not particularly good.

We used to go to West Lake frequently. Food quality was always good and very fresh. We stopped going a couple years ago because portions started declining while prices were rising.

Have since tried Seabird on Center St in Wolfeboro on friend's recommendation. They use no MSG. We have only done takeout 2x which was very good but cannot comment on the ambiance or service level.

when we went in we were the only people there, so we almost left. We were tired, hungry & just fought traffic so we decided to stay. Just had rice, egg rolls, & wings, so hard to mess up, but it wasnt bad. When we left about 11there were about 8 tables taken

IMHO, a chicken wing is a chicken wing. Chinese food? Meh. All the same, or just variations on a theme.

So I was quite pleasantly surprised when we had supper at West Lake for the first time. I got the chashew chicken, which was great. Be sure to get a soup, also.

(Interestingly, I thought their chicken wings were what I'd get elsewhere, so I reckon my point stands. :) )

Also, if you're in Concord, be sure to check out the Red Apple Buffet. It's in the Heights section - not downtown. Coming from Alton, you take 28 to 393 and get off at the 132 exit.

The food is great. But the big bonus is that the sushi bar is included in the buffet. Gotta love all you can eat sushi for like $10! http://www.clipartof.com/images/thumbnail/1223.gif

(For that reason, I have a hard time abiding China Garden. Sushi's good, but when you're used to a sushi buffet, it's hard going back!)

If you been to China, or even Chinatown in San Francisco, defining Chinese food is not easy. No Pu Pu Platters, sweet & sour, etc. The food is mostly defined by geographic region...Szechuan, Hunan and the spices and local foods of those regions.

I frequesnt an Asian grocery market in San Francisco. I can't tell you what 90% of the things are that are sold there. Some really strange stuff. Last year I paid $26 for one clam! Called a Geoduck. Strangest animal you'll ever see. It weighed about three pounds. Although harvested in Pugent Sound, only Asian markets sell them.

Think a burrito is Mexican? Nope! Very hard to find them South-of-the-Border. They originated in Los Angeles and a version (not the same as in USA) can be found in northern Mexican towns that have been influenced from it migrating south from the USA. Can't get menudo in Laconia!

And just a quick historical note for them that have been in the area for awhile.

It's been Red Apple for maybe 5 or so years. Prior to that, it was the Ginger Garden. For years and years, it was the May King (or Mai King - can't remember. I guess I'm mnemonically phoenetic at the moment and I do aplogize if I mipspelled smoethign. I'm srtange liek htat). :)

Gary, I got to know. How did you cook that bad boy? Seen an episode of "dirty Jobs", and Mike Rowe helped out harvasting them. I was amazed at how big they were.

If sushi can't sell at The Weirs, we ain't gonna be findin' geoduck clams at Hannafords anytime soon. And, uh, I guess you know what these things look like...Right? And they can get 4' long and live 170 years.

Best way to cook a geoduck?...Remove the meat from the shell. Boil for 30seconds, just enough to loosen the skin for removal. Slice very thin. Dip in soy sauce mixed with jalapenos, Thai fish sauce (Nam Pla) and fresh ginger. So it's fundamentally raw...sashimi style. It can also be sauteed, but I don't prefer it that way. Chop sticks are also mandatory!:)

I lived in Seattle for years, and they are a strange phallic-lookin animal that I could never bring myself to try. (pronounced goowey-duck, btw) They sell it at the Pike Place Market in Seattle. I saw the 'Dirty Jobs' episode, and they did say how difficult it is to cook properly. Not my thing.

For the thread - I used to love Phu-Jee, but not anymore (and there's nothing closer to me, I live on Water Street). I still love their cashew chicken, but find the service rude, like customers are a nuisance. Imagine that!

I get Chinese food at China Garden in Belmont - yes, I drive all that way when the occasion arises.

Or, for Thai, I love Sala Thai - now Lanna Thai next to Laconia High School. They have a dish called Drunken Noodle that I'm addicted to! (I've gotten my whole office addicted to it!) I haven't tried the new store in Weirs Beach, but they also have drunken noodle. (Not sure why it's called that, btw)
