From a restaurant perspective, are there any types or classes of places that we are missing or you would like to see close to you? Obviously our region is large and "as the crows fly distances" mean little when circling the lake.

I am in Moultonborough so El Centenario in Wolfeboro is not a bad ride. I find that place to be good and authentic (don't get me wrong I love a Chili's restaurant fajita). Regarding the servings, I have never gone hungry but a little more would be nice:)

Now that there are Tio Juan's Margaritas in most cities down the road and having found the Mexican food around our lake to be wanting....Mrs. HC and I would love to see a Margarita's somewhere on the lake.........then we wouldn't have to drive to Concord, Manchester, Portsmouth, Salem and Exeter to get really tasty Mexican food. :liplick:

I love the Mexican idea, too. I love Tio Juans, something along that idea would be great.

But another place I'd love is one that does soups and salads REALLY well. I've been to a few brew pubs that have specialized in them, and a hearty homemade soup with a good beer is a pleasure on a chilly day. And, I would go even in the summer! Summer soups can be done really well also! A variety of salads - not just iceberg or caesar. This place would use great ingredients, maybe even some fresh and local! Good food that's Good FOR you.

Huge Crazy Gringo fan here. Regular stop, before heading thru the channel, to put the boat away in Paugus Bay.
However, can be a culture shock, if you've never been. Very much a Harley bar. But great people. Great drink. Very good food.

O Steak and Seafood in Lakeport is the closest to a "real" steakhouse up here.

Then there was one in Stratham in a plaza for awhile, they were also from Mexico, that place seemed to be doing well when all of a sudden the doors closed -- and this goes back about 5-6 years......

Now when you say steak house do you mean Outback, Lonestar, Texas Roadhouse or are we talking Ruth Chris's, Morton's, Smith and Wollensky?

We have the former chains nearby and it would be nice to have one near the lake.

The more upscale places could never survive. Not enough people willing to spend that kind of money.

Wouldn't need to be a Morton's, etc. Just open another location of Manchester's Hanover Street Chop House. This is as good as any Morton's I've been to. (Maybe just 1/2 notch below Ruth's Chris, but it's very close) :liplick:

not so much a restaurant, but it would be nice to have a nice coffee house. Someplace like Cafe Vittoria down here in the North end where you can enjoy a nice cup of Cafe Mocha, a little piece of italian pastry, a nice hand rolled cigar, and the company and conversation of some good friends. This is one thing I miss while up at The Lake on vacation.

The Village Perk in Meredith (except for the cigars) was a very nice coffee house, but seems to have closed, perhaps to open under a new owner. Mocha Rizing in Center Sandwich also may fit the bill. Nice people, good coffee, good food.

For those that have never been to one, it's a drive up style fast food place with burgers, tater tots, cherry lime-ade, corn dogs, shakes and so much more.

They're only as far north as PA that I know of, but "If I had a million dollars" I'd buy a franchise and put it here!!!!

I suspect you're kidding, but you might actually be onto something there.

A good HAWAIIAN restaurant is a delightful thing.

There's one near me here on the left coast; many of there dishes incorporate Spam, which is a staple not only in Hawaii but on other Pacific Islands with a strong prior U.S. presence.

I noticed the post on "O" Steak and Seafood, and I'll make the observation there is something there that seems to be unique to the Lakes Region..correct me if I'm wrong. It is their Lobster Mac and Cheese. We had the pleasure when we were up there two years ago. It came in a huge dish, enough for two, and was insanely delicious! Never have heard of it before, but here is someone who can't wait to get there and have it again. Maybe I'll share my order...but...maybe I won't! "O" is absolutely tops!

I am a big fan of Regina Pizza too! I will pick up pizza from places like that when I am on the road and have them not cut it, then throw it on a hot stone in a 550 oven when I get home. It is just like it came out of their oven.

I would love to see a great pizza place around- there are good ones, I mean really memorable (OK I have pizza issues ;))

I'd love to see a Tripoli pizza/bakery up there. If you've ever been to Salisbury beach or the new one in Seabrook you will know what I mean. When there you either get Tripoli's or Christies. They have the full pizza/bakery in Lawrence, MA. The absolute best Italian bread you have ever tried. Nothing like picking up a warm stick and slathering it with butter when you get home. Ixtapa in the Fox Run Mall in Portsmouth, suggested by another poster, IS run by real mexicans. Their chile verde is excellent; the best I've had in years.

On the other hand, I had two bad experiences, two months apart, at Las Pinatas in Laconia, about 8 years ago, and have not been back since. Both times the food was WAY over salted; the second time so much so that I couldn't even eat the entree (and I was HUNGRY). However, some people appear to really like this place so I've been planning to try them one more time. I guess it is possible that I hit the two worst items on the menu, or the two worst days of the year, or something like that. I'll let you know if and when I give them a third try.

I don't have that many needs, but a better Chinese place than Lee Wah would be good. It's also tough that over in the Moultonborough area your choices of dining in the summer comes down to either driving far or waiting a long time.

We went there for dinner a couple of weeks back on Saturday night. I assure you that they were open. The food was wonderful; they have a number of similar entrees to O's (same management) and the prices are lower.

Really good ice cream with the sizes similar to Kimball's in Westford, MA. ... and available by boat. I have been all over the lake by boat searching for good ice cream and nothing compares. The next best thing is to go to the IGA in Wolfeboro, buy a couple of pints of Ben and Jerry's and go out onto the lake and ride slowly... watching the sun go down, eating ice cream!

Remarkably no where on the Canoe's website does Scott show what Days he is open. The Hours are posted not the days. I stumbled on a review of Canoe that had the Days and Times. I fallowed it up with a call to Canoe to verify it.

Seems the hours for canoe are posted as quoted and in bold. I drive by there all the time, and they do close for a couple hrs between lunch and dinner, but are definitely open weekends and weekdays too(as posted above)

I too would love a Indian restaurant somewhere around the lake - the one in Concord is the closest I know - its a long way to go for dinner.

Would also like a good Mexican one - I've tried Las Pinatas twice and both times found the food pretty bland and uninspiring.

LemonGrass is definitely a good one for Asian - are they still open (I know Mike Love, the owner, died last year)

Wish there was a good small Italian one - Fratello's is OK, but not a place for an intimate meal - its too open for my taste.

And last - wished that restaurants had more than the one "token" vegetarian meal (which tends to be the same at all restaurants - some nondescript pasta concoction). After being a vegetarian for38 years, it gets tiring to always have the same option when going out to dinner with friends who don't want some "ethnic" food place where there are several vegetarian options. Though I should say things are way better than they were 30 years ago, when many restaurants had NOTHING vegetarian and no idea how to get my repeat business.

One of the few times we will ever agree about anything:) The Wal-Mart pizzas are fantastic. They are fresh, packed with meat or veggies. The best selection is in the Concord Super-Wal-Mart. Many different kinds & styles. I buy a lot of them and put them in the frezzer. They are as good as most pizza you will find in ANY local place.

I CAN ASSURE YOU WE HAVE NEVER BEEN CLOSED ON THE WEEKENDS. BOTH CANOE & O SERVE DINNER 7 NIGHTS A WEEK, CANOE OFFERS LUNCH 7 DAYS A WEEK AND O STEAKS SERVES LUNCH MON-FRI.
BOTH RESTAURANTS HAVE THE SAME HOURS 11:30-2:30 5PM TILL...

THE NORTH END IS THE ONLY RESTAURANT THAT IS NOT OPEN FOR LUNCH. WE ARE OPEN AT 4PM FOR DINNER STARTING MAY 14.

The next best thing is to go to the IGA in Wolfeboro, buy a couple of pints of Ben and Jerry's and go out onto the lake and ride slowly... watching the sun go down, eating ice cream!

Just read this thread. I do miss Kimballs. My wife and I lived in Acton for a year, 83, and used to visit there often. We went from there to Weston for almost 20 years before relocating/retiring here. I don't miss that Mass traffic one bit, just the food. Seems everytime we find a good restaurant around here, and the familys been coming here for 70 years, it closes shortly thereafter or changes ownership and goes downhill.

If by Japanese Hibatchi you mean what I call a chop-chop-fry-fry there is one on 3A north of Bristol. I can't recall the name and they do other things. We went once and it was very good. It is on the west side of 3A.

Don't forget the Lyons' Den - we are open year round, located at the Glendale Docks, by the Marine Patrol. One of Roland's frequent lunch specials is a Baked Lobster Mac'n Cheese and we often have Ahi Tuna, Pan-Seared Bass, Taco Salad and always the boneless Roast Stuffed Duck - Lunch and Dinner Tuesday through Sunday. There aren't too many restaurants around the lake that are open year round anymore, and we have an excellent lake view for dining.

Pardon the commercial... but the winters are long in the lakes region and we just want to make sure you remember that after 3 years we are still here.
