View Full Version : How did you pick your Forum UserName?
This'nThat
11-18-2008, 08:00 PM
Maybe this has been asked before, but I'm curious -- How did each of you pick your UserName? I'm sure some thought went into it, because there are some pretty unique names on the Forum. Is there an interesting history behind it? Or, did you do what I did -- pick it based upon what you thought might describe you or your activities? Sometimes I can guess -- but most often, not.
I chose my username -- This'nThat -- because I thought I'd be on a thread and talk a little about This, and a little about That -- thus: This'nThat. Besides, it has an explosive abbreviation -- TnT, which I thought was pretty cool.
What about you?.....

gravy boat
11-18-2008, 09:33 PM
In the "old country" our last name literally means "gravy". Our name is Czech and begins with a "V".
Our parents purchased a family boat about 15 years ago....it was the color gray.
When trying to come up with a name for our parents' purchase one of my brothers came up with "Gray 'V' Boat" or "Gravy Boat".

Misty Blue
11-19-2008, 03:02 AM
It's 19 degrees outside and there is a boat tied up to my dock. (Using the old lightbulb trick).
She is called the Misty Blue and is credited with three lives saved by the Coast Guard.
Picture Forest Gump...."That's my boat....I call her the Misty."
Name withheld by request.

You may want to check out a similar thread from April 2007. What's in a name (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4508). Over 130 posts with folks explaining their screen name. I found it to be interesting reading.
My screen name is explained HERE (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showpost.php?p=47835&postcount=106). However, I strongly recommend viewing the whole thread. For instance, find out who chose their screen name because "FatLazyLess" was already taken.
Great idea to revisit the topic and get more forum folks to 'fess up :). Don't hesitate, add your name NOW. With over 3,000 registered users there should be many more posts on this topic. So come on and let us hear from YOU!
Blue Thunder
11-19-2008, 06:54 AM
Mine is a little more convoluted. The name of my boat is Blue Thunder. The boat is blue (and white). It has the "Captain's Call" exhaust which allows it to be switched on and off (on=thunder). The name comes from the 1983 movie Blue Thunder starring the late Roy Scheider (JAWS) about a state of the art police helicopter that had the ability to muffle the sounds it made by going into "whisper mode". I'm also in the same line of work as Mr. Scheider's character(among other things).
Anyone remember JAFO?

Argie's Wife
11-19-2008, 08:46 AM
Hubby is "Argie" and so I'm "Argie's Wife"....
Someone referred to me as "Argie's Frau" back when we were doing the Forum Fest this year and that tickled me to no end. Our last name is as Greek as it gets and to put it with some German... well.. that pretty much describes us. (I'm as Anglo as they come; he's first generation American.) Thought about changing my handle, actually...

Daniel Stern (the voice of the Wonder Years, Home Alone, City Slickers, etc.) played Jafo in Blue Thunder. "Just Another F@#$ing Observer" was what it stood for. Great movie!
Anyway, JK are my initials, and the "Joshuatree" comes from the greatest album of all time made by the greatest band of all time. I've seen them 29 times in concert, been to Bono's house, met the band six times, and have over 600 of their songs on my iPod.
Okay, let the "stalker" comments commense. Did I spell that right?

Sunbeam lodge
11-19-2008, 09:09 AM
Sunbeam Lodge was the name of an Estate on Veasey Shore Road. It was broken up into smaller lots. When the old homes were destroyed I was able to salvage the Original huge sign that hung on the property. I also was able to save the little lodge that was built on the edge of the lake. I learned that the cottage was originally won in a poker game on Beaver Island and then dragged across the ice to it's current location. It seemed fitting that I hang the sign on what was left of the original estate. Hence the name.
fatlazyless
11-19-2008, 09:17 AM
Reading the comics, back in the 1960's, I always read Dick Tracy in the Boston Globe. With characters like Pruneface, Itchy, Go Go Gomez. Officer Heap O'Calory, B.B. Eyes, Dr. Von Schnooker, and Mumbles, my choice of fatlazyless seemed like a good fit.

Skipper, you're right - there are some interesting stories in that old thread. I remember the thread last year, but admit I lurked.
Mine's pretty simple. I'm a Graphic Designer! I'm a NH Native who is fortunate enough to get paid for something I love to do! I've been designing since high school, and you probably walk past some of my work in the grocery aisle every week! I had moved to Seattle for a few years, but NH called me back to start a family. Now, I live in Meredith on Lake Waukewan year-round and work in Gilford. Currently, my work spans across all of New England with a major media company as I "telecommute" from my little office!
I sympathize with you Jersey-ites - my work commute isn't complicated by highway traffic as often as it is by wildlife!
Island Girl
11-19-2008, 10:08 AM
My explanation is in the original thread... I live on an island and am female...
I have always liked the rhythm of the Elton John song, "Island Girl". Much to my dismay ... after actually listening to the lyrics.... I found I did not have much in common with the woman to which he referred. She was a lot taller than me and her occupation was a bit questionable!!! I decided to keep the name anyway... gotta have a sense of humor. :D

Just used my nickname...to keep it simple! :)
Mine came from my old high school girlfriends initials. Secondly I think they should reset the clock on the site as it is an hour fast. :)

looniac
11-19-2008, 05:24 PM
In (I believe) 1978 we decided to come up for the week between Christmas & New Years. It was silly to open our place so we made a reservation in Piping Rock.
As bizarre as this sounds, there was a guy who had committed a murder somewhere in the area. The guys name was Luniac.
On the radio station, which I think was probably WLNH, they kept reporting "sightings" of Luniac here and there. It was crazy.
Hence, LOONIAC...

Growing up, friends and family would meet at my parents house for food, drink, and talk. We kiddingly called our house, "Price's Tavern". Our cabin on Rattlesnake in turn is "Price's Tavern North." Thus the user name...
Nothing special, just my initials.

nj2nh
11-20-2008, 05:22 PM
My forum name was Jersey Girl as I am a female who reluctantly lives in NJ, but there was a Jerseygirl so I changed it to nj2nh. I confess I totally stole that from a license plate I saw once in Wolfeboro - a car from Jersey, of course. During the summer, I saw that car again, on a highway here in northern Jersey. I tried to catch up with it, but it was too far ahead and gone.
I often use my license plate as my moniker, Echo Pt, but thought I would try something new as then everyone would know who I was and where we summer! Of course, now you all do anyway.
Great thread - so many creative people!

PennyPenny
11-20-2008, 05:50 PM
I picked my user name from a chicken we had but was interperted by my 3 year old grandson as PennyPenny. Her name was Hennypenny and he always yelled or called PennyPenny and she would come running or squacking to him. Many members think it is just adding my 2 cents worth to a post and most of the time it is but anywho...thats where I came up with my name. I use it a lot on other boards/forums.
I'm a Forum member with a not-very-innovative Forum name. When Don started the original Forum, I used my actual name as my Forum name. But since my first name is also "Don", and when the Forum's popularity grew like gangbusters, some members were confusing me with the webmaster. So I decided to change my Forum name to my initials, which wasn't very creative but I suppose it does the job!

11-24-2008, 04:30 PM
I always urge my sled-riding buddies to join me for a ride after the sun sets. I love riding the trails at night. More than during the day, you know when other sleds are coming around corners because you can see the headlights long before you see the sleds. Riding to the top of Moose Mountain on a moonlit night is heavenly. Deer and Moose are seen more often at night on the trails also. At one point during a break in riding I was extolling the virtues of that particular trip and a fellow rider dubbed me the "Nightrider" and it has stuck ever since.

We used to stay on our boat and referred to it as Water Camping. so our handle on the lake became Water Camper. Just seemed appropriate when we started posting on Winni.com to use the same profile name.

Tired of Waiting
11-27-2008, 09:33 AM
This was posted back in 2004 as a reply to RG
ToW: Acronym for Tired of Waiting; Derived from the rules and philosophy of life.
Tow begins at conception. From that time forth one is in the mode of waiting. So we can most likely blame our parents for ToW. It all starts with the nine month wait to move into the light of the world. From there we wait for the attention, food, bottom cleaning and so on. The parents are in the mode of waiting for the child to indicate their needs which is at the most inopportune times. Which the parents can blame on the child.
From infancy to the time we pass into the other life waiting takes at least 75% of our time. For some much more.
For example on any given day it could go like this:
Rise from bed, no waiting here, well for some of us that is. To the kitchen, start the coffee, we are now in 1xToW.
While the coffee is brewing we start the eggs, we are now in 2xTow,
Ok at this point you might say you’re not waiting for the coffee because you are starting the eggs. I ask, would you be starting the eggs if the coffee was done instantly? No, you’d cream and sugar the coffee and THEN start the eggs.
Now on with the story; we put bread in toaster and push the button down, we are now 3xToW. So as can be seen we can be in multiple ToWs. The eggs finish, we plate the eggs, the coffee finishes, we start to cream and sugar the coffee and the toast pops up so we leave the eggs and coffee to tend to the toast. Now the coffee and eggs are in Tow while you tend to the toast. Here you can see that not just humans can have ToW. At last the meal is complete. However, you might now have to wait for the other person/s to join you for the meal, again another ToW. Now all this is being done very early in the morning while you are waiting for the sun to rise to produce that beautiful sunrise on the lake another Tow. Oh and while all this is going on in the morning you are still in ToW for that return phone call from yesterday.
You may continue this story on your own. If not you can ToW for me to do it in the future.
Just think, what would life be like if there was no ToW? Instant everything!! There is something to be said for instant gratification.
ToW :)

As a kid, spending some summer time with family in Winter Harbor at Camp Theresa. Our Dad named the little row boat the "Fink". There probably were a few beers involved in the process and I suspect our uncle Vinny and/or Uncle Bill may have had a hand in it as well! So in honor of our father and the name of that first boat in the family, we now have a few craft on the lake named after Fink...Fink2, Fink3, Fink4, Fink5. Way to go Dad!

"Codeman" was my nickname for my golden retriever Cody, who actually passed away last night at the age of 15+. He will be missed dearly. So much for holiday cheer...
"671" does not have a meaning, it was simply 3 digits that AOL used to differentiate my screen name from others when I got that email address 13+ years ago.
My heart goes out to you codeman. It is even worse because we have a 14 year old who has a bad heart and probably does not have long. It is so hard as they are like kids to us. My heart is breaking.

I'll admit, Grady, the name of the super market was a play on words. I'm not familiar with the dog and "Because of WinnDixie" ,however. I got back on to say I'm sorry to sound flip and "funny" in the light of the posts just before mine by tis and codeman671. To lose a loved pet is exactly like losing any other family member, because that is what they are. We lost a sheltie we'd had for 12 years, three years ago and it nearly killed us. We were not going to have any more dogs..."too old"! That lasted 12 days. God was good enough to let another sheltie arrive to rule us inside of a couple months. I don't know where we'd be without her now, so you have my heartfelt sympathy. The pain was bad; I hope you'll get to have another "joy" down the road.

12-11-2008, 10:33 AM
Well...
I guess there are a number of reasons for my "handle." First, it's a play on the name of the street our lake home is on. Second, it's to honor our favorite lake waterfowl, in all its mysterious majesty. Third, it probably has to do with the dubious state of my own sanity, in the eyes of some. But it definitely does NOT have anything to do with the quality of my singing voice :)

This is a wonderful topic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and the other similar forum thread. That older thread (2007) asked for more detail. Lakegeezer
01-07-2009, 08:37 AM
When I started coming up to the lake in the early 80's with my friends, we often talked about retiring here and living the geezer life. We planned the things we would do in retirement, sort of a bucket list, which included building a submarine, opening a local radio station and operating a lake barge. When the forum first started in the 90's, the phrase "when we are geezers" was still a common start to a conversation. I chose the name Lakegeezer, knowing that someday I wanted to be one and knowing I had better grab the name before anyone else did. I'm not yet retired, but moved to the lakes region in 2008 as a full-time resident. I'd still like to build a submarine contraption some day. So - I'm still growing into my user name, and fully expect the Winny forum to still be here when I reach my goal.

Commodore
01-28-2009, 02:15 PM
I’ve been coming to the big lake for many years. The family has stayed at some of the yacht clubs around the Lake as well as a few in salt water. I truly love the Lakes Region and wish I could afford to live by the Lake. With today’s economy however, I’m not sure I can live where I am or anywhere with a real roof and indoor plumbing!
One of the meanings of “Commodore” is the presiding officer or president of a yacht club. Many benefits go along with being a Commodore. It can be a powerful position. The head of the YC usually gets the best of everything. They get the best response to personal concerns. They have more influence on policy. They get more respect and they stand out from other Yacht Club members except from those few who think you are doing it all wrong. ;)
A bit of work and politics and you receive the power and control often given to a Commodore along with the perks of the position.
I wanted to choose a powerful marine related screen name and The Commodore was just a natural.
I enjoy this web site very much. There are many fine people posting here and this thread is a great way to meet some of them. I wish more members would post the story behind their screen names no matter how simple or complicated the derivations.
Good wishes to all of you. :)

I used the "random name" generator function when I signed up originally.I don't remember that "random name" generator function when I signed up for the forum. That option must have been added after I registered. I always wondered about the meaning of your forum name.
Mine is not a random name. I would be proud to tell you that my family name is *Kerr* and my parents named me *Joe*. That way my name, *Joe Kerr*, would be a "clever" name that sounded like Batman's foe the *Joker* and my parents had a wonderful but slightly warped sense of humor. Alas dear forum reader, that is less than accurate.
The reality is that I chose this name because I don't like to be serious all the time and the name Joe Kerr makes me smile. That's all. If I get to post something relevant but funny or obviously sarcastic I hope my name will make you smile too. :) Unfortunately, (but beneficial to the forum), I'm no match for Mee 'n Mac with their quick wit and rapid responses.

Actually, brk is my initials, which I rarely use on public forms (I think this forum and Hacker News (http://news.ycombinator.com) are the only places.
-LNT is the initials of our boat name, which I still have not put on the boat itself :) Lady and the Tramp or, L n' T. Hopefully this year I'll get around to it, I'm running out of excuses considering I also own a 24" vinyl plotter and a decent stock of outdoor vinyl selections.

If you are reading this and are a registered forum member you should have a post in this thread.
My forum name comes from my family and friends. They always thought of me as a landlubber. When I first bought a boat they all took pleasure in chiding me by referring to me as The Skipper.
Here comes The Skipper they would say. Is The Skipper going boating this weekend? They would ask if The Skipper had his ship together. What does The Skipper want for dinner. Things like that and those that are unfit for a family forum . To thwart them teasing me with that handle I started calling myself The Skipper. I embraced the name and I came to like it. The Skipper is now done explaining his name (hard to refer to myself in the 3rd person).
Now, how about the rest of you! If you are a registered user then log in and post to this thread. All the posts are enjoyable. I came out of hiding to post to this thread and you should too. You know you are out there :coolsm:.

Skipper of the Sea Que
03-09-2009, 11:01 AM
Earlier when I posted in this thread I forgot to include the story behind my forum name although I did go into detail in the 2007 thread that I linked to that asked us to go deeper than just how we selected our name. That whole thread is still very interesting, CLICK: What's in a name (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4508) to review or add to it.
To say on topic  My screen name comes from 2 of my favorite hobbies, Ham Radio and boating. The Skipper part doesn't need an explaination (does it?).
The letters CQ together are an old telegraph and radio code for, “a general call to any station” usually for an informal friendly chat or quick signal check (unless modified with additional information or qualifiers such as CQ DX which is a CQ to contact distant stations). It is very common to call “CQ” in many Ham Radio modes (not used much in the newer and popular FM repeater operation though).
Sea Que was a(n alleged) clever tie-in between the two hobbies, Ham Radio and Boating. My Dad was a Ham and came up with that name for our first family boat around 1958 - I'm keeping up with the tradition. For more detailed information you can scroll down to my post, #106 in the 2007 thread – Once again that thread is HERE (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4508).
That’s on topic, now to the Saugus Sub-topic (Santoro’s Sub Shop :rolleye2:) and other Saugus memories.
That was WMEX, not WBZ.
R2B
I saw that yesterday but did not have time to reply. You are right R2B. Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsberg never had any regular shift on WBZ.
Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginberg’s legendary top-40 radio program called the “Night Train Show” was heard daily 6-10PM on Color Radio Famous Fifteen Ten, (1510) WMEX Boston He was there from 1959 to ~1967. A different 1510 signal from that of today. Arnie was a true radio pioneer on the air and in the business. Anyway, I may be a bit sensitive to the distinction between the more straight laced WBZ versus the more free spirit of WMEX. As a pre-adolescent I fantasized about being the Arnie Ginsberg of a future generation. When I was in college and the radio bug bit me I thought it would be a life goal to be where Arnie was. Well, a year out of college, back in the early 70’s, I wound up doing Arnie’s old shift, on-air 6 nights a week, 6-10PM on 1510 WMEX. By then radio had changed since Woo Woo blazed new trails. He started as a technical type Engineer who crossed over to talent - something only a rare few have done in Boston.
I used to pester my folks to bring me to Adventure Car Hop, one of the show sponsors, so I could get a "Ginsburger". If you knew the "secret" and said "Woo Woo" you would get a "free record" - at $0.99 for a 45 rpm record in the store, free was a magic word. The free record was a let down - a promotional copy (and not for sale) of some junk song - the type of record stations would throw away by the buckets full - My first, but not last, media disappointment :rolleye1: .
Santoro's: Where was Santoro's before it was at the the site of the current drug store?
If you remember the Red Coach Grill you probably remember the G.E.M. store across the street bordering Breakheart. And then there was the Drive In theater. Up there.
Kiddie Land wow I hadn't thought of that place in decades and I instantly saw it in my mind - I loved it as a tyke. I used to pester my parents to take me there.
That circle (rotary) by the HoJo's car hop was the DeFranzo Circle. A short way from there, up route 99, was CHICKLAND. I remember the excitement looking all the racks of rotisserie chicken cooking in the windows at ChickLand - ahh that chicken, they crisped it up with a coating of something and added a super yummy gravy (I'm salivating just remembering). Chickland spawned SteakLand which later turned into Hilltop as I recall.
Then Howdy Beef Burger Drive In ($0.25 burgers). On the other side of town, Heck Allen's restaurant - not too far from... what was that place, a combination Library & Sewer department
I'm leaving out a lot of stuff 'cause this is getting (it got) way to long.

Wow, you guys bring back some memories. Lived in Salem at the time and drove my fathers 57 and then 61 Chevys to Adventure on a regular basis in the early 60s. I never got a free record but if you said Woo Woo Ginsberg you got free fries or something.
My first wifes father used to be the projectionist at the drive-in in the late 60s so we used to get in for free when we were dating.

I really dont remember who the customer was that called me the machine shop man. I do recall that it was his friend that asked him about where to have his engine rebuilt and not being able to remember my name at the moment he direct his friend to go see the machine shop man in Nashua. So when he walked into my shop he stated that he was here to see the machine shop man and it sort of stuck with me. I shortened it up to Macshpman to make it the screen name I use. So I got my screen name from my customer Kevin and he got a rebuilt LS6 454 from me. Its has worked out well for both of us.:)
Sandy Beach
03-31-2009, 10:43 AM
My name is pretty simple and I use it often. I love the beach and Sandy surely fits with beach. I enjoy using a non-gender specific name. I like various types of Sand including the very fine sand. It is hard to find good sand available to the public around the Lake
A few people really think my family name is Beach as I have been called both a Beach and a son of a Beach. If you don't know if I am male or female it is more difficult to call me either one :emb: .
I been driving to the lakes region for more years than I can remember. On the drive we go on Rt 1 through Saugus and Santoro's Sub place has always been a must stop for the family.
I remember when it was at the site of the Walgreen drug store and I think that was the first and original location of Santoro's in Saugus. IMO Sea Que's question about Santoro's first location is a trick question. There was another Santoro's in Everett or Revere that opened years after Saugus opened but they were not the same people or quality.
That's what we need at the lake. A Santoro's.
Sandy Beach
06-10-2009, 11:13 PM
I now know where Santoro's was before it moved to the Walgreen's land. This is more like a trick trivia question. I've exchanged a few PMs with forum members about the original home of Santoro's Subs in Saugus before it was on the site of the Walgreen's Pharmacy. Sea Que remembers the location before Walgreens but I and others do not.
It was in Saugus, not Everett or Melrose or Revere. This was a Saugus location. Thanks for PMs from Just Sold, trfour, Sea Que, Saugus Boater and others.
If you don't know or care about Santoro's then at least add your screen name derivation to the thread :)

Crawford was a company that made cast iron cookstoves in the 1800s and earlyish 1900s. Mine is a ca. 1900 version - the Century Model.
They throw off lots of heat and the oven's great for roasting chicken, baking pies, or even warming up a pizza.

Gilligan

My screen name is Gilligan:
Grab a seat and sit right back. Here is my tale if you can believe it. I’ve been on this forum for several years and around the Lake even longer. My name is Bob. Denver is where I was born and raised.
I seem to have a problem. I have many vivid dreams centered on the same impossible situations. In these visions I am part of a small group of people stranded on an uncharted desert isle. It gets weirder. In my fantasy, no matter how hard I try I don’t seem to be able to do anything right.
I try to understand the deep underlying causes of these recurring visions. Maybe it is due to a lack of navigation skills. Why am I stranded on a desert island that, in my delusional fantasy, is overgrown with lush tropical vegetation? Why is the beach the only place with sand on a desert island? Could the huts, tropical surroundings I envision actually be a desert mirage? It is quite a conundrum.
All during these chronic drawn-out hallucinations I have absolutely no libido and it seems like everyone I imagine I see on this island is celibate. Why do I see myself always wearing the same outfit with long sleeves in tropical hot weather? Others in the group never wear the same outfit twice. One girl wears hot pants and a midriff shirt. Holy Mary! Another woman gingerly wears long sparkley gowns and dresses. Reminds me of a famous model or a movie star.
There is an inane, somewhat oblivious, high society Yacht-Club couple along and I have no idea how they fit in. They are very formal and lovey-dovey and she has a big beautiful wardrobe and he reminds me of Mr. Magoo. There’s also a big husky domineering fellow who is always around me. He hugs me often and calls me his “Little Buddy”. He thinks he’s my captain and wants me to sleep in his shack (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Once I grew up though, I thought I’d never again have to sleep in an upper bunk.
Potential rescuers just pop up magically on this imaginary island and then they disappear. Every week I howl after we just miss getting saved. No BoatUS in my dreams!
I actually have vivid flashbacks of these dreams while I’m awake. This impossible scenario is especially strong when I’m watching my old TV. The visions take over the TV set and it’s like I’m watching my hallucinations. By now you must be wondering if my mental state is alcohol induced. Nope, the strongest thing I drink is ginger ale or coconut milk.
An inventive professor believes my mental condition is the result of frequently helping a neighbor, Timmy Leary with his chemistry experiments back in my bongo playing beatnik days. For those x-gens, back in the ‘50’s beatniks were the non-conformists and a prequel to the substance-enjoying, free-spirited hippies of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s.
Now, I hale from Maynard, MA where I live with my lovey girlfriend Ann and our wrinkle nose pug Zelda. One day, when I am fully cured, I might marry Ann. For pleasure and mental therapy I spend as much time as I can boating on Lake Winnipesaukee. Touring by boat for a few hours without losing sight of land is soothing, comforting and it eases my mind.
My screen name and avatar resemble the way I see myself during these delusional dreams and hallucinations. My therapist says that the Lake and this forum help me to cope with my imaginary life. Contrary to the vision of a desert rain forest, Winnipesaukee and this forum are not figments of my imagination. I’ve been told it takes a lot of WORK (I have trouble saying that word) to deal with my mental health. It’s been over 25 years and my expensive psychotherapist says I might never get rid of these apparitions and cure my phobia of oceans.
Thank you for accepting me here and for your wonderful forum.

I had a good friend in Lake Shore Park in the fifties and remember your boat. We thought it was the aquatic version of a Corvette. I was over to LSP recently and it had changed so much I could not even have even pick out my friend's cabin. It actually had a canvas roof in those days, with about 50 leaks.

Oy Vey. You think it was easy to come up with a plausible explanation for my screen name :D ?
Ugana is a crazy place. It is believed that many unknown species of plants and animals are yet to be found there. Of course they speak Yiddish in the small area of Ugana where I would hang out  . The official language is The King's English though many languages are spoken there. You can check Google or Wikipedia for Ugana and Papua New Guinea for more information.
This is NOT :offtopic: because screen name derivation IS the topic :rolleye2:.
Anyway, in the area I hang out they would call you, "mentsh fun ber indzl". If your Yiddish is rusty you can copy and paste to look up the translation HERE (http://yiddishtr.com/yiddish-english.htm).

IslandRadio,
My dad was a very serious armature radio operator. K1HDO We used to carry equipment up mountains and string dipoles all over the yard. His quad on the tower was a neighborhood landmark. When I was little he used to build a lot of equipment to save $$$. I remember imitating my father by wiring a bunch of stuff together and plugging it into the wall. Lucky to be alive I guess. It's funny, we never quite understood why dad would love to have these polite one at at time conversations with people all over the world by Morse code or microphone. Now that the world is addicted to emails and text messages, it does not seem that unusual.
