On Monday's shakedown cruise for the M/S Mount Washington, it occurred to me that I was enjoying a great day of being on the lake, and I didn't have to worry about gassing up the boat. I didn't have to worry about trying to navigate among the rude boaters whose numbers have been on the rise in the last few years. Higher gas prices and high-volume traffic on the water have combined to keep me on land a lot in the last 3 years, but on Monday it suddenly hit me, "How I've missed being on the water!"

Then I got an idea: Avoid high gas prices and rude crowds by using the MOUNT for getting out on the water this summer. I mean, it's not exactly the same as boating, but for the many of us who are feeling "forced ashore" it's a good way to get out on the lake, worry-free.

So I looked into it, and discovered that you can get a SEASON'S PASS... not just for the MOUNT but for the Sophie C. and the Doris E. for day cruises, and it's $79.

Before pricey gas and when boaters were still mostly friendly we used to love taking guests around the lake and going out to eat somewhere. The ship docks in all those places, or we could just eat on board. This might end up being my new way to spend time on the water!

Yes, if only the Mount had a waterski program where you could waterski along towed by the Mount's, high torque diesel engine. Its' wake is very smooth and I know I would have no problem skiing the Mount on a standard 75' towrope.

How about a waterskiing, Elvis, look-a-like contest?

A friend of ours who can no longer drive purchases a season pass every year for the Mount. She is able to walk from her place on Paugus Bay to the Mount dock and often takes the boat to Center Harbor or Wolfeboro for shopping, dining, etc. When they have the large craft shows at Brewster Field, she and her mother (who does drive), take the Mount from the Weirs to Wolfeboro just to avoid the bumper to bumper traffic on Rt. 28./109.

I didn't know how much the pass cost. As you New Englanders say, "That's a real bah-gain!"

A GREAT IDEA!!! I wonder how many people use the mount as a shuttle service to and from the major ports of call. It really is a great idea if you don't want to deal with the summer traffic. I never even thought of that.

Years ago when I worked on the Doris E we spent one summer doing tours out of Wolfeboro. The dead head cruise across the broads was boooorrrrrinnnnngggg. Thinking about it now they should have offered a shuttle service on those days. Anyways it was short lived and soon after they terminated service in Wolfeboro for the Doris. Ahhh the memories. I have lots of fun stories about the Doris. Good Times.
