A small red and white plane landed in the parking lot of the "former" location of a popular restaurant....the pilot did an amazing job of bringing the aircraft to a stop with no casualties. Not long after coming to a halt I witnessed that very same airplane trying to taxi down Weirs Blvd. on the back of a flatbed truck "flying" down the blvd. at a speed of at least 20 to 30 mph....I didn't recognize the pilot....I noted the time...it was almost 5 this afternoon and I called the FAA to report this occurence.
The FAA laughed and said they had numerous reports of a plane down near the BIG LAKE but no one had filed such a flight plan .... but....they found the plane on their "radar" and told me it was heading toward Laconia International Airport but doubted it had enough fuel to make it all the way....it would probably land again in another parking lot of a "future" VERY popular restaurant down the street from Lowes Gilford. I don't know who to report this to....I thought if anyone could help...it would be the Forum folks....the FESTERS! HELP!!!!

I was going to report this crash yesterday, but didn't have the guts to! I was afraid I would scare someone thinking it was a real plane crash. But alas, the little red plane has left the building. Looks like it could use a little sprucing up before it lands on another roof.

That Waldo Pepper's airplane is not the only, long time feature that has left that 'dysfunstion junction' area. Happy Landing, Carl's Restaurant, The Willow's Restaurant, and Waldo Pepper's are all empty. The former Dexter Shoe is available for rent. Surf Coaster has closed and is for sale..
That Happy Landing store used to be busy business.
In a year or so, the area's one bright spot, the Winnipesaukee Playhouse, will be moving to the former Anna-Lee doll factory in Meredith.
So, wonder what will move in to the former Waldo Pepper's?
Probably, the new Cumberland Farms is too much close competition for another store similar to the former Happy Landing as Cumby's has very competitively priced gasoline and is open 24hours. It's like the new Cumby's has shifted the business center of gravity away from that formerly busy junction area.
That Weirs intersection area could use some help.
So what type business could succeed at the former home of Waldo Pepper's? Probably some bike week vender space would be a winner. But, what else for the other 50 weeks? Maybe a pizza parlor?
Maybe a mega hotel-casino at the Surf Coaster? No way...not this year.

The FAA began an immediate investigation into the the situation, and preliminary results have them puzzled. It seems the pilot was an American Robin, and the co-pilot was a European Starling. The navigator was a carrier pigeon, and thank heavens, because he was the only one who knew where he was going!
It seems the plane didn't actually crash. It was grounded for failure to comply with scheduled FAA-mandated inspections of various wiring harnesses and safety features. Since this particular aircraft was deemed to completely out of compliance with every FAA regulation ever set forth, officials were at a loss as to how it ever remained airborne in the first place.
Further complicating the investigation, the crew remained tight-beaked during questioning. However, the co-pilot apparently got defensive and questioned why he was required to file a flight plan, since he'd been flying for years and had never been required to file one before!
It was eventually decided that the entire craft would be disassembled, and a forensics expert would be contracted to determine how the horsepower rating of the ceiling fan was providing enough propulsion for the craft to remain aloft. Pending results of this investigation, a larger ceiling fan may be required.
Meanwhile a team of highly skilled technicians will undertake the task of complete refurbishment of the fuselage, wings, nose and rudder. Upon completion of this project, the craft will once again be reassembled, and it is expected that officials will give the aircraft another thorough inspection prior to it's next flight.

How many flights have been cancelled so far? The air travelers are getting sick of having to sleep in the terminal. :(

OK Pepper, you never disclosed which hanger its hiding in right now!
The good (hurray?) news is that right after the plane disappeared from the parking lot it landed in the new hangar next door at Gulbicki's Garage went up!

Currently the above-mentioned aircraft has been transported to a secure area, where it is being examined. At the insistance of the crew, it has been located in an area known to be patrolled by a large band of wild turkeys, known for their fowl treatment of intruders. In addition, Blue Jay's has been contracted to provide audible alarm services.
Meanwhile, the international crew had been detained for further questioning, but have apparently flown the coop. A spokesperson for the European Starling deferred all questions to the law firm of Shrike, Falcon and Kingfisher. Sources close to the American Robin suggest that he is trying to worm his way out of the situation. The Carrier Pigeon was spotted in Central Park, where it is speculated that he is negotiating a tell-all book deal.
Investigators have declined to comment on the flight of the three detainees.

In every cloud there is a silver lining... I'm thinking if all the businesses around Dysfunction Junction are bailing out and leaving empty buildings behind, it seems a great opportunity to grab whatever real estate is necessary to build a well-functioning junction of those roads!
Who knows... maybe the existing intersection was part of the problem for businesses there. I don't know how many "close calls" I've had in that intersection, I've always had a major headache trying to pull out of any of those parking lots for any of those businesses except during the dead season, and as a result I've either avoided it or avoided stopping near it whenever possible.

With all the changes to the area near what was Waldo-Peppers, I have to update the driving directions I give people coming to visit us at the lake.
Up until now, the driving directions tell people to "look on your right for the red and white airplane on top of a building and take your next right."
I am having trouble now with finding the new wording. "Turn right after the vacant general store on the left and the vacant sandwitch shop and vacant lot that once held a building on the right" might scare them all away.
I really hope we are able to recover and get some new, good businesses in there. If not, I might suggest the visitors get off at Exit 23 so they can see the significantly updated Lobster Pound on the way in.
I will miss my walks to WP's and the great sandwiches and other food items they made with great care. However, I know we will have a great, new family place to visit once all is finished.

On the brite side, the Lobster Pound's new restaurant building featuring a large lighthouse looks supercalifragilistiicexpialidocious! It looks like the large lighthouse has windows and is part of the floor plan.
Lobster Pounders can look out from the big lighthouse windows across Meredith Bay to Eagle Island. Eagle Islanders can look back and see whats cook'n that night at the Pound.
Understand there used to be a Howard Johnson's on the same spot and its' HoJo blue and orange building was a Weirs' icon until HoJo burnt to the ground in about 1972.
Looks like the new Lobster Pound will fast become a new go-to spot at the Weirs, and maybe an icon. It's a very happening looking building and is set back from Route 3 up on a bit of a hill.
So, how come someone didn't do this with the Lobster Pound like maybe 30 years ago? :D

I drove past the New Lobster Pound last weekend and it does look like quite the fancy building. And it would be nice to sit and eat and look out over the bay, but you forgot to mention the one eyesore tht they would also be viewing, the flourecent volcano at the Weirs Beach waterslide. When that thing went up, Wiers beach went down. Its something you'd see at Salisbury beach amusement park. Whose lame idea was that?
