Deer Photos

This evening at around 6:45 PM a small herd of 13 deer attempted to migrate from Sleepers Island to the mainland near Smalls Cove. They almost made it to the shoreline when something (a neighbor's dog, we suspect) caused them to panic and run back toward Sleepers. It was a shame to see them expend so much energy to get to the mainland and then be scared back across the ice to the island.

Here are three photos I quickly shot when the deer were out on the ice.

Nice action shots. With what we are reading about the ice, they better try again soon or get stuck with island life for the summer.......Hey, how can I do that?

I know that moose can swim if they want to, but can a deer?

If a deer were stranded on an island, would they be able to swim off after the ice melts?

So now that these deer tried to leave their island life are they no longer considered "Islanders" This assumes that they were born on the island and didn't just winter there in the first place:)

It is not unusual for deer to swim from Cape Cod to Nantucket island.

A couple of years ago there was a doe that swam from five mile island to six mile island everyday for a week. Each day at the same time! One of the NHMPs started meeting my tow boat at H-hour and we set up a mini security zone around her each day. Way cool.

Great shots DRH,wonder if someone else came out to take photos and spooked them down by where they were coming off the ice. Deer seem to catch the slightest movements.

As most everyone knows, the tiny deer tick that is carried and spread by deer is a very serious concern.

Today's www.citizen.com has an article about a Laconia Lyme disease group that just started in February and wishes to hold monthly meetings. Next meeting is on March 29.

LACONIA - New Hamphire is posting the highest rate of increase in incidents of Lyme disease, an often-misdiagnosed health condition that effects the central nervus system.

The group is looking for a Lyme disease knowledgable doctor to speak at this meeting, plus they have a yahoo message board link in the article.

Here's a happy thought. Q: What's worse than getting Lyme disease? A: Getting Lyme disease with no health insurance!

Unfortunately we didn't get a picture, but this morning a doe swam from just north of the twin islands directly to our small beach. She hopped out of the water, over a small stone wall and into the woods right next to our house. My son-in-law and his 3 year old son watched the whole thing. What a neat experience.
