View Full Version : Ice Fishing Derby Feb 9 & 10
Major problem

Question, does this discussion belong in the winter sports threads or fishing? It has fishing in the name but interest in this annual spectacle crosses many boundaries.
I, along with thousands of other hopeful fishermen will be checking in here daily for the status of ice-in starting around mid-January. The Derby has been postponed a few times due to lack of ice. They've scheduled it a week later this time.
I suppose this subject might be of mild interest to sledders also.

Were already seeing some icing of very small coves and ponds, so hopefully this year will be on schedule!

If it's a major problem, it'll get moved.
Half of the fun of the fishing derby for me, is sledding around the lake and visiting with my ice fishing friends. :)

I went by at 3PM and it was still iced over good! Some people use that pond as a 2 week prelude to ice in, but it seems quite early. I'm ready, bring on the ice!

I'll let the pros prognosticate, (CLA, Rose, R2B & others) but next week is forecast to be abnormally cold for early December with maybe even some storminess invloving the S word. I wouldn't, however, count on an early ice in.

We noticed last night about 5 that Lilly Pond had frozen over, but I agree it does seem awfully soon for Winni. Maybe a few calm, cold nights....

My "ice in" ritual to watch for the water temps get to 34 degrees....then it's just a matter of a couple weeks of cold air temps, no major blows, and scant snow cover to get the lake to kick and lock in. We're a little ahead of most years right now measured by water temps, but if memory serves, you'd have to look back to the early 1980's to find ice-in before New Years. In most years, "safe ice" -- defined (by me) as at least 8 inches of black ice -- happens between the middle and end of January in a typical year. That timing is earlier in some coves/protected areas on the lake.
Boat came out yesterday, so ice-in can't happen soon enough now!
