Anyone know when Captain Bart's opens up for the season and any other info about their schedule?

Memorial Day Weekend?

Hi. I think he is aiming for Memorial Day. He's been at the site, has put up the "roof" to the shop and is generally doing spit and polish work right now.

Spoke to Bart and he thought he would not be opening until Sometime in June due to his busy schedule. Could be Friday June 8th or the week after.

I can't get my city-girl wife to go to Capt Barts. Is it worth it? Does he specialize in any type of fish?

Absolute BEST! The scallops he gets in are so good and FRESH. The crab cakes are great. We do a Captin Barts run at least once or twice a summer.

He always has (frozen) softshell crabs that I cook at home. Yummy. He always has the best lobster. If you want 2lb (or something more than the little guys), you can call and reserve them, which is a good idea in summer as he gets really busy.

Wow, softshells! The place doesn't look like much and when I drive by there with my wife I always say we should stop. She sort of shudders and says "no way". I'm definitely going now - she'll buy seafood at Devylders in Wolfeboro and it's gross.

Kinda reminds me of the old Village Kitchen Restaurant. I'm sure some of you remember that one, in the old run down beat up gas station. That place was so dirty my wife thought I was nuts when I first brought her there.... UNTIL, she tasted the food. The best breakfast around, still is, IMO.

Barts is pretty much the same. The place looks run down but the Seafood is fresh and they get it in daily. Tell your wife to give it a try, you won't regret it.

Offmycloud - If your honey insists on buying fish in the grocery store, try IGA in Wolfeboro center instead of Devylders. Prices are better and fish is fresher. Actually, prices for all products there are cheaper than DeVylders and alot cheaper than Stop n' Shops in Mass.

HOWEVER..... When Capt. Bart's is open that is the only place to buy fresh fish in the area in my opinion. The variety is fantastic, the freshness is superb and the prices are good. Though we are only weekenders, we usually get fish at least twice per month there. We can't wait until they open! :liplick: :liplick:

Thanks Zee - she's a pain. I can't get her to go to any "hole in the wall" places ever ("eeewww!!"). I'll show her these posts about Barts and we'll check IGA. If that town had a Whole Foods she'd be ecstatic.

I'd be ecstatic about a Whole Foods, too! That being said, I love hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

If you want fresh seafood go to Bart's. If not, continue to go to the supermarket. Most of the fish at most supermarkets is previously frozen, than thawed. You don't get that at Bart's. The only frozen fish at Bart's is the chowder fish he sells frozen at the end of the season, otherwise it's never been frozen. It really depends on how fresh the fish is you're use to eating.

Bart has always said he never wants to take any business away from any other owners in the area. With his small operation, he frequently sells out of fresh items by the end of day. So don't go to divorce court over the fish if your wife likes the supermarkets in the area.

Don't judge a book by its cover, it's what's inside that counts. Low overhead usually means reasonable prices. For the most part it's a family run business with his family coming up with the fresh fish on different days and working.

Seriously, it sounds like a great place and I am going to check it out. We're up Memorial Day weekend but it doesn't sound like he will be open then.

My wife is exactly like your wife. When we "First" saw Capt. Bart's, my wife (a city gal) said, "who would ever buy fish from a road side stand?" We never went there until we read great reviews here on "Winni.com." So we tried Capt. Bart's. We will never buy fish anyplace else, but Capt. Bart's! We go to Capt. Bart's Every Friday, from when he opens until he closes in the fall. He has the best, freshest fish anywhere in the lakes region. Lobster? The BEST! Crab Cakes to die for! Haddock? FANTASTIC! But you do have to wait in line sometimes, because it gets busy, but it's well worth waiting! When you go (and I know you will) I know you will be a "Regular!" Tell him, "The Eagle sent you," to get his wife's recipie for Steamed Mussels! Fantastic! Enjoy!

Spoke to Bart and he said his fish market will be open on this Friday, June 15 from 4PM to 6PM, as well as Saturday and Sunday.
In a couple of weeks he will go to his summer hours and be open Wednesday through Sunday.

Bart said he is hoping to open the second week in June. He's not sure if it will be Wednesday, June 11th or Friday, June 13th. He did mention he did not think they would be open on Sunday's this year.

All seafood is frozen or "flash frozen" before it ends up on your plate. Unless they have live tanks.

Not true,Espo.Haddock,cod,salmon,swordfish,hallibut,cl ams,scallops and some others are mostly delivered fresh to restaurants and seafood stores.
The frozen at sea product isn't bad ,though and many of us use it when fish are spawning and the flesh changes a little.
I rarely buy seafood at the chain stores because a lot of it is farm raised from Asian and South American countries that don't have standards of cleanliness as good as ours.......with the exception of E.M.Heaths and stores like Capt'n Bart's.
For example,Mehan Fisheries is a regional dealer who selects his product at the Portland and Boston fish piers.When he buys swordfish,he selects it by measuring the fat content because fish that are migrating are nowhere near as good as fish that are feeding.Chain store just buy the cheapest,usually previously frozen product.He supplies Heath's and many local restaurants including ours.

Agree with you Samiam. Most is iced down onboard and delivered fresh to fish piers. I can't speak for Atlantic cod going to California - who knows. :rolleye2:

As far as Asian shrimp and fish I stay way away. They are called sewer shrimp for good reason. Google it.

I just talked to Bart an hour ago- they will be open on the Friday of Father's Day weekend (or the second weekend of Bike week depending on your perspective)!

Watch for new hours for 2011. We almost didn't open at all this year at all. Capt Barts will be closed on Sundays and Mondays. OPEN Tuesday thru Saturday. WE HOPE! Fridays will stay the same 4-6 pm, Sat. 12-5 but the other hours are going to change due to schedules and availabilty of trucks to meet the boats. Fuel prices are limiting the boats and also the trucks to keep the prices competitive. As soon as we can make it work, hours will be announced. We're shooting for 12-5 Tues. Weds. Thurs. The phone will be hooked back up next week as the phone company forgot to do it last week. We are going to have to depend on large orders by phone. We have the ability to get everything fresh everyday but just can't send an extra truck out at the last minute like we did in the past. If a large order is needed for Sundays, it must be ordered by the Wed. before. We will hold your order till Sunday A.M. in the tanks and meet you for pick-up. We hope you understand the situation. We thank you for your understanding and support. See you Friday, June 17th 4-6 P.M. Linda and Bart

If you'd rather let us do the cooking...we have fresh seafood coming in tuesday,wednesday and friday from Mehan Fisheries and Ipswich Shellfish....... fresh haddock is really nice right now and we're getting fresh medium to small whole belly clams from northern Maine.Also some very nice sea scallops and Mehan Fisheries gets some of the best swordfish around.
Mehan tests the fat content before he buys it at the docks.As he explains,swordfish that are migrating are thinner and yield a very dry filet so he only buys whole fish that have been feeding and have been fattened up.
Most of the big chains buy from the lowest bidder and you don't get the best quality.Most restaurants get the best seafood and as far as retail goes......the two best places I know of are Capt'n Barts and EM Heath's

Went to EM Heath on your suggestion. All I found was pre-packaged (styrofoam tray - cellophane wrapped), pre-weighed servings. No whole fish or custom cut fish. Did I miss something? This was in a section at the rear of the store. I am used to seeing the fish whole, checking the eyes, skin, flesh firmness.

Just got home from a long weekend up at the lake, went to Cap't Bart's yesterday. We got lobsters, shrimp, scallops and steamers. Everything was first rate, but the steamers were by far the BEST I have ever had. What a jewel in the rough that place is!:)

Grady..they package it up in the meat room....they receive whole fish and then portion it.......we had swordfish on sat and it was awesome......also the wild salmon was incredible. It's really the best around. They get delivered 3 times a week and always fresh..........I'm only ranting because I know where they buy their fish. I'm sure you'll be pleased with any of their fin fish.
Also they carry, catfish, trout, tilapia.......stay away from that. It's all farm raised and previously frozen. Try the sword, salmon, haddock and occasionally halibut and you'll be happy !! :-)

agree steamers were great as was the cod
