At 1:30pm 4/18/05 what port is the Mt Washington unable to navigate that would prevent Ice Out from being called? All the cams around the lake show open, ice free water that I can see. Anyone know what port has ice?

Check out the front lawn cam... lots of pile up there. That means it could be Wolfeboro or Alton Bay. With that much ice, the wind could blow it anywhere still.

The cams only tell a small part of the story. The man in the airplane sees all. And, based on what was out there yesterday, there still has to be quite a bit of ice lingering where the wind has blown it! (Can you tell that I'm Jonesin' for that 4/20 ice-out?!?).. :D

There was no ice in Alton Bay or Wolfeboro Bay as of 4 pm this afternoon. Here are some photos I took this afternoon. You can click on each photo for a larger image:

Photo of Little Mark Island taken from the "Scenic View" on Rt. 11 in Alton Bay around 4 pm today. Moose Island can also be seen.

Looking toward Wolfeboro from the Rt. 11 "Scenic View" in Alton Bay. There was ice around Black Point, and I suspect ice might have been pushed into Chestnut Cove by today's wind, but Barndoor Island (in the distance) appears to be in the clear.

Also taken from the "Scenic View" on Rt. 11 in Alton Bay around 4pm, looking down the Bay. No ice is in sight.

I "zoomed" the lens down the Bay to get a closer view. You can see Sandy Point on the right.

Taken in Jockey Cove, Wolfeboro, at around 3 pm. Didn't take the Marine Patrol long to get their boats out on the lake!

I was at the overlook around 4pm, also. I think the ice off Black Point would have been enough to keep "ice-out" from happening. If you look of in the distance, there's ice off Wolfeboro Neck, which is also part of the Mount's route (DRH's photo shows this better than mine). My hunch is that it will all be gone when the sun rises on Tuesday.

We were at the Alton Bay scenic lookout Sun around 2pm and took pictures that could be cousins to those posted by DRH except there were large swaths of ice out by Little Mark and by Barndoor. There was none in Alton Bay. A drive down rt11 showed lots of ice off Ames Farm and goodly amounts btw shore and Welch I. It all looked like a good wind would break it up in a hurry and that's just what we had Sun and today. I'm guessing those who picked 4/19 are in the hunt and the rest of us, BLNY.

No way I'm going into the water anytime soon. On Sun it was ~70F and felt hot in the yard. Sitting on the dock and catching the wind off the bay was another matter. When the sun was clouded over, the wind (blowing pretty much down the bay) would come in alternating warm, cool and downright chilly gusts. There were (we thought) an amazing number of boats out and about in the bay given the ice just past the mouth of Alton Bay. Probably 60% fishing and the other 40% just tooling around.

Lastly FYI I could not sight the black tipped marker off Sandy Point, the companion to FL23. I saw the red tipped marker and the orange FL23 but no companion buoy.

Bizer,

Interesting that we were at the "Scenic View" spot at about the same time this afternoon. We must have just missed seeing each other.

The ice off Wolfeboro Neck was drifting eastward. It was actually made up of many small pieces of ice and was thinner than it appears in our photos. We were in Jockey Cove in Wolfeboro watching that ice float by a short time before I took the pictures from Rt. 11 in Alton Bay, and the ice was very close to the shoreline there. It was interesting to watch it move by, as it appeared to be melting very quickly and none of it was making it down to the marker at Sewall Point. We saw a boat come from Parker Island down to Wolfeboro Bay, cruising alongside that ice. I would bet ice-out will be declared tomorrow morning.

What an exciting build up to ice-out with all the wonderful web cams, threads and daily photos.
Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped to make this annual event even more special.
See you at the lake!

Most likely a day late (and a dollar short!) These photos taken about 9:00 a.m. yesterday (4/19) from the scenic outlook.....the same spot as DRH and Bizer's photos above. They illustrate what IG is talking about; the ice pile-up shifting around. Neat stuff to watch!

Ice Out? Not yet
GILFORD — Ice is still lingering in Lake Winnipesaukee.

At the end of a stint of afternoon fire patrolling Tuesday, ilot David Emerson said there was still ice left near Little Barn Door Island, Wolfeboro Bay, and the mouth of Alton Bay.

Ice out for Lake Winnipesaukee is called when the MS Mount Washington can reach all its ports. Emerson is the official responsible for making the Ice Out call every year.

For those of you whose guesses were made after the 21st of April? (Looks like mine only missed by 2½ weeks).

If the weather gets "socked in", and the aircraft won't be in the air, "Ice-Out" won't be called those days.

You know what to do.

According to "Snake Eyes" Ice Out was declared at 11:33 today, April 20th 2005...

Too bad the weekend is forecast to be so poor... may still go up if it looks clear enough... :)

It is interesting that the ice out declaration was so quiet, not on The Citizen (http://www.citizen.com), WMUR (http://www.wmur.com), Lakes Region Association Web (http://www.lakesregion.org) site (the official caller of ice-out based on Emerson Aviation's report), etc.

WMUR had a small link to a video last night, the Citizen is still displaying the story, "Ice-out, Not Yet" on their web site.

The media was asleep yesterday.

Wmur showed footage of Dave Emerson declaring ice-out at 11:33 am April 20th on last nights and this mornings news broadcast.
