View Full Version : URL won't work on Forum

I can view this URL: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-70241.html

From what I can gather, only one other Forum user has been able to view it at the "GFBL owners: the real story" thread. (Getting "Blank" or "Cannot find Server" messages, instead).

Long URLs, I notice, are abbreviated. The abbreviated form will appear in the "address window" as the abbreviated form. (Lots of dots in the middle). No site appears.

If it is helpful, here is the entire URL, as I posted it -- but exactly "cut in half" intentionally:

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/archive/

index.php/t-70241.html

Only one person has found it, but it appeared under http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...ead.php?t=70241 (which also appears abbreviated).

Another: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70241&highlight=fasshion (Which again, also appears abbreviated).

Why can't the preferred, black-and-white archive version -- such as in my original post -- appear?

Is it my "old" Windows Millennium Operating System versus the newer ones?

Another: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70241&highlight=fasshion (Which again, also appears abbreviated).

This is the only link that worked on my system - WinXP SP2.

This is really a problem for OSO, not this site. I don't know enough about that site to speculate why certain URLs don't work.

Thanks, both.

Here's why it's important:
1) I hate to have some members click on my URL to get a "blank".
2) When bringing a URL to the Forum, I need for it to be "G" rated.

As you may have noticed, topic-related threads from some boating sites are definitely NOT "G" rated.

To eliminate the "dots" in our Forum's abbreviated URLs, I've located a "URL-shortener" site which has provided me with a short URL to the black-and-white ("G") site:
http://snipurl.com/e0jo

Here's the 2nd shortened one, to the other, same-text, but NON "G" site:
http://snipurl.com/e09w

Both are the same text, it's just that the offensive pictures are removed in my 1st URL, and not in my 2nd URL. This latter URL is sufficiently tame by their usual standards, but not to ours -- I'd guess.

Please advise if the black-and-white site appears. This is their archive area, with the avatars, colors, and everything else but text -- removed.

Please advise if the black-and-white site appears.Neither link works for me.

The dots that you see to shorten a URL are only on the screen and do not effect the link itself. When viewing a dot shortened URL put your mouse pointer over the URL and then look down in the status bar. You'll see the full URL. You can use URLs of almost unlimited length and they should work fine.

The problem you are having is because of the links on OSO. They apparently can't be used directly and have to be accessed through other pages on that site or during a logged in session. Using a detour like snipurl won't help.

The first link drew a "Done" and a blank area.

The second made the journey, complete with avatar (didn't scroll the page earlier).

This is the only one of the links that works for me: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...ead.php?t=70241 (http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70241)

Here I am, checking and re-checking every, single, URL I post for relevancy and "sanitation" -- and still get tripped up on my Best-Find-Ever!

Apologies this site appeared "" to GWC: For days, the site appeared just fine to me, and I only thought I had shared this revelation with some concerned citizen-voters.

Thanks, you three, for the help with my first-ever query of the "Site-Support Forum" in my three years here. (I don't ask directions on the roadways, either). :rolleye2:

Now that I've just tried both "Guided" Mode and "Enhanced" Mode in this post, there's still this other technical question -- next!

:)
