Don, Great Picture. We had a full moon snowshoe walk last night at Fort Point Woods / Trask Swamp area, and the moon was absolutely brilliant. I tried to get pictures, but can't even come close to this one. It was truly a brilliant sight, both at the time you took your picture (from our house, it was moonrise over Lakewood Estates -- absolutely HUGE moon), and between 8-9 PM. Had to be a beautiful sight last night looking out over the lake from your place. Thanks for sharing the picture.

Pepper -- Yes we got mooned...sorry you couldn't be there!

Excellent picture, as always!

This reminds me of a Texas moon that I got to enjoy while travellling back to the East Coast from Califrornia, in 1958.

I would like to add "stunning" to the list of adjectives used to describe the picture. Nice work.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. It really was a stunning sight, one of the most beautiful moon rises I've seen. (No wise cracks, Pepper! :rolleye2: )

The blue cast in the photo reflects the original color of the scene, and the stark contrast of the white birch trees against the dark pines adds to the beauty. If you look closely, you can just make out a summer cottage in the woods behind the birches.

What I also like about the scene was how the moon back-lit a small area of thin, wispy clouds.

I have posted a 1024 X 756 pixel version (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=5775&size=big&password=&sort=1&cat=523) of the picture in PhotoPost, if anyone would like to use it as wallpaper.

Here's a link to determine what each month's full moon is called.

Thanks, as soon as I saw the picture in PhotoPost, it became my latest wallpaper (replacing a shot of a snow covered Main St. from the Wolfeboro Street CAM from 3/08/05)

Thanks for a beautiful picture. Can't wait to get back to Smith Point to enjoy such sights. Florida may be warm but can't match the beautiful Lakes Region. There is something about New England that cannot be matched.

This picture provokes a thought. A photography related website I used frequent had a group of people who every so often (mebbe every few weeks) would hold an informal "contest" and post their best pic or 2 on a given theme. This beauty could have been in a "night shot" or "moon" or "desolation" theme. I wonder if the talented people here might want to try such a thing ? Every so often a theme would be proposed and everyone would have 2 weeks to post their best pic (or 2 ?) on that theme (as they intepreted it). The photopost could be the gallery (if Don doesn't mind the added storage) and the poll feature (open for a week of voting after the 2 weeks closed) could be used to decide the "winner" for that theme. The "winner" gets to pick the next theme and along it rolls. We all win because we get to view more pictures of our favorite place and the photographers get an excuse to take more pictures. What do y'all think ? Anyway just a passing thought ...

DRH - Somehow I was reminded of Buzz Aldrin's quote as he viewed the moon, "Beautiful! Beautiful! Magnificent desolation" when I saw this. I must be watching the Science Channel too much :D Nice pic !

I held off posting a response to your suggestion, M'nM, to see what others might have to say. No one has posted anything in almost a week, however, so here are my thoughts.

I, for one, wouldn't want to participate in a photo competition. I can appreciate your well-intentioned thought that such a competition might inspire folks to take more nice photos, but that's not the reason I like to post pictures. Each picture we've seen here, either on the Forum or on PhotoPost, has meant something special to the person who posted it, and the pictures were posted for the purpose of letting others enjoy them too. For us to compete with one another and have some pictures judged to be better than others isn't something I'd want to do. I'd prefer to just let each person judge for himself or herself what each posted picture means to them.

Just my $.02!

DRH -- I hesitated to reply to this post as well. I can agree with you and with Mee-n-Mac that there are some fantastic photographs on this website. Seldom do I look to the Photopost section or a picture posted in the forum, and not find at least one that impresses me with either its content, composition, or photographic quality. And I certainly would not want to have someone feel slighted that their photograph was not selected as part of the poll, or was and received few or no votes.

And a gentle reminder to all...if there is nothing good on TV and you feel like seeing some good pictures, log on into Photopost and crank up a slide show. Get a couple of cookies from the cookie jar, and cold drink or cup of coffee or tea, and sit back and watch the "travelogue".

Nice thought Mee-n-Mac, but I would be more comfortable without a contest. Thanks for caring about the quality of photos on the website.

Yeah, I kinda figured that nobody was buying in when the posts went dry. What works at DPReview isn't universal ! Oh well only another 9,999 ideas to try before a good one  I only hope that the lack of response re:my reply mentioning ForumFest II is for a different reason
