I think we brought this up last year, the typical direction of the wind will make your swim more difficult if you start in Alton Bay.
Good luck!

You're right, RG, most of the time the NW winds would make swimming from Alton Bay to Meredith quite difficult. The 3 or 4 swims I've witnessed over the years all went from Center Harbor to Alton Bay, not the other way.

Are you beginning your swim at 12am or 12pm? Swimming in the dark with kayak escorts is not safe. The kayaks will need legal navigation lights which I have never seen. Will you have larger powerboat escorts also?

I actually saw a kayak with nav lights set out from the public docks at Lovejoy Sands last weekend! I guess that there's a first time for everything...

First (and only) time I've seen lighted kayaks was last year (or mebbe the year before) when we were dining at Garwoods in Wolfeboro. We were eating in the bar area and I was looking out over the bay when I saw a swarm of whitish lights float by. Somehow my brain first seized upon the idea that the were little floats with lights or candles on them (like you'd see in some Japanese festivals). This made no sense to me so I continued to watch and finally determined they were a group of kayaks. They only had the white all-around light (as is required) and it wasn't very bright nor really white ... almost looked flourescent. The light was close to the water (atop some short pole I assume) and personally I wouldn't have gone out into the middle of the bay (on a Sat night  ) as they did.

WRT M Welsch's midnight swim - I agree w/Propellor and hope he has more than just a (single) kayak along. So long as he keeps close to shore I suspect all will go well but I think it a bit much for a single kayak to keep constant track of him, as well as other traffic. Should any aid be required is a single person (or 2) going to be sufficient to effectively help ? This is one case where I'd violate my rule re: constant use of a spot light. I'd light-up the swimmer, from behind, the whole way. Is it a full moon that night ?

Lake Girl

I think that the Lakes Region Conservation Trust has a mapped course around the Lake. As I remember it goes from Weirs and other spots and visits 5 mile island, Stonedam, etc. Give Em a call. They love Kayaks. It's snowmobiles that they hate.

Give LRCT a call for your kayak escort.
