Could this be the earliest ice out? How thick is the ice? It looks gray on the Weirs Cam, does that mean the ice is sinking already? When it starts sinking that usually means ice out is not far away.

The ice is sinking? What?? Worked with a guy who insisted that the ice sank every year only to float back up in the winter. Wow!?

It only LOOKS gray because there is no snow on it and when the lake froze there was NO snow fall on the surface to form "snow ice" (snow which weights the ice, the cracks allow water to soak the snow and then freezes white) thus with all the rain and warm weather lately what you are seeing is 24" of black ice, which is not ready to "sink"...lol

Went out and spoke with an ice fisherman on Paugus Bay Saturday afternoon. There was still about 18 inches of ice out there.

Here's link to a pic taken on 3-6-04 next to the boat ramp in alton bay, looking towards Sandy Point.
I understand that out by Echo Point and further out, still a couple of feet of ice, but has been thinning quickly. Colder weather this coming week should slow the process some, I would guess.
